Accused Jeffersonville rapist held on $100,000 cash-only bond

Gerald Holland, 39, could face up to 32 years in jail on new counts

A Jeffersonville man accused of strangling and raping a woman he was dating is being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond, court records show.

Gerald Holland, 39, is charged with class B felony rape, class C felony criminal confinement, class D felony strangulation and class A misdemeanor domestic battery.

The charges stem from an alleged “brutal” rape of a 30-year-old female March 20, said Jeffersonville Police Department Detective Charles Thompson. Holland was socializing with the woman and became angry and attacked and raped her, Thompson said. Holland had an initial hearing on the charges in Clark County Superior Court No. 1 on Thursday.

The complainant was so seriously injured from the rape and strangulation that she was hospitalized at Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Services in New Albany for several days, Thompson said. She was released and is recovering, he said Wednesday.

Holland, who faces a May 20 jury trial, has a recorded criminal history in Clark County, according to court records. Past convictions include possession of cocaine, domestic battery and intimidation.

For the new charges, Holland could go to prison for six to 20 years for the B felony, two to eight years on the C felony and six months to three years on the D felony. The misdemeanor could add up to an additional year of jail time, and a fine of up to $5,000. Each felony conviction could also lead to a $10,000 fine per count.

Holland’s next court appearance is April 15. As of publication deadline, an attorney for him was not listed in court records.
