Injured Clark County Sheriff’s Department Officer Mark Meyer had another surgery Thursday, but is still steadily recovering from being shot in the line of duty Monday, officials say.
Meyer, 27, was shot by Douglas Damon Frakes Jr., 33, in New Washington while responding to a domestic dispute, said Clark County Sheriff Danny Rodden. Meyer sustained injuries to his cheek, head and shoulder. Frakes was found dead in a nearby field about three hours later, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Rodden said.
In a statement released through the sheriff’s department Maj. Chuck Adams, Meyer’s wife, Maraih, said her husband’s “condition is improving and his spirits are good.” Meyer, a five-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department, is also father of a 1-year-old daughter.
Meyer is being treated at University Hospital in Louisville, where doctors most recently operated on his jaw and finger, Adams said. He is still in serious but stable condition.
Rodden released 911 tapes relating to the shooting. Frakes’ wife and teenage stepdaughter made separate calls to the Sheriff’s Department, and both women warned dispatchers that Frakes was armed. Frakes’ wife said on the tape her husband had beaten her and she was hiding behind New Washington Elementary School.
