If you speed through residential Cardinal Lane in Jeffersonville, there might be a police officer sitting on one of the front porches waiting for you with a gun — err, a radar gun, that is.
On Wednesday morning, Jeffersonville’s Board of Public Works and Safety approved such a plan after hearing from area resident Christian Small, who said teenagers leaving Jeffersonville High School are often cutting through Cardinal Lane, many times speeding as children play nearby.
“I have saved, not my own, but several children from being hit by a car,” Small said.
She told the board there were 19 kids in the neighborhood, many of who are under 10 years old. She also requested a “children at play” sign for the street, which the board also approved.
It was Mayor Tom Galligan who suggested the enforcement technique. He scored a roomful of laughs when he suggested having a police officer sit on a front porch with a gun. Following a couple of funny looks, he clarified that he was referring to a radar gun — to detect speeders — not a lethal firearm.

• The board approved a $5,477 change order for the Charlestown Pike sidewalk project. Engineer Jorge Lanz said the change order was necessary in order to relocate a catch basin and put in a curb in the area.
