Bliss House in Jeffersonville catches fire

JEFFERSONVILLE — Fire officials are investigating what caused a blaze at Bliss House in Jeffersonville on Thursday morning.

The property, a halfway house located at 211 E. Maple St., had a fire in one of the upstairs bedrooms, said Jeffersonville Fire Department Maj. Jason Sharp. Authorities received a call at about 9:05 a.m., and sent 15 firefighters to the scene.

When they arrived, they found heavy smoke in a room, but no smoke or fire traveled outside, Sharp said. It took about 10 minutes for officials to extinguish the blaze, the cause of which is still under investigation.

Sharp noted the property, which houses 12 people, had a sprinkler system that likely helped diffuse the fire. He said residents were in the house during the fire, but that no residents or officials were injured.

A cause of the fire may be determined in the next week.
