Thousands of jobs coming to Jeffersonville

— The United States Census Bureau’s National Processing Center (NPC) is planning to hire up to 2,000 people in Jeffersonville for the 2010 census.
The hirings are being carried out in three stage with the first group of hirings already under way.
For the first wave, the NPC is planning on hiring at least 200 workers as clerks, according to a census bureau press release. The clerks will be responsible for filing, processing and preparing documents, as well as preparing materials for shipping, working on an assembly line, processing mail and computer related work.
The deadline for the first wave of applications will be Aug. 28, said Heather Mitzel, communications specialist for NPC.
A second group of hirings will begin later this month or in early July, she said. There will be approximately 500 data transcribers added and working through the 2010 census processing cycle.
All of the jobs being created will be temporary, but if full-time opportunities exist the temporary workers are welcome to apply, Mitzel said.
“As we wrap up the processing some of those jobs will end in the fall of 2010 and some will continue until 2011,” she said.
The third wave of hirings is planned for early 2010, bringing the total employment level at the NPC to about 5,000 people.
The jobs will be located at either 1201 E. 10th Street or 700 Patrol Road, both in Jeffersonville.
