Jeff man surrenders after SWAT waits for more than 3 hours

A Jeffersonville man was arrested on felony charges after a standoff with the Jeffersonville SWAT team Thursday night.

Wallace D. Baker Jr., 41, stayed in a home at the 6300 block of Northern Lights Drive with police outside for 3 1/2 hours after a domestic disturbance call, a Jeffersonville Police Department report says.

Baker allegedly had a dispute with his live-in girlfriend, kicked her out of the home and threatened her with a weapon, the report says.

Because of the unknown mental state of Baker when police arrived, a weapon believed to be in the home and unsuccessful attempts by police to contact Baker, the officers on the scene called the SWAT team, according to the report.

He voluntarily surrendered at about 11 p.m. Thursday and was booked into the Michael L. Becher Adult Corrections Complex.

The arrest was for class D felony domestic battery; intimidation, a class D felony; and the class A misdemeanor of resisting law enforcement.

If convicted on all charges, Baker could face up to seven years in prison and up to $25,000 in fines.
