EVENING NEWS CHEERS & JEERS: June 20, 2009

newsroom@newsandtribune.com

CHEERS

... to the city of Jeffersonville and its workers who organized the inaugural Smokin’ on the River festival. It created good participation by area businesses who decorated pigs — including The Evening News’ Phot-HOG-rapher, designed by Amy Huffman-Branham.

The public turned out too, because, well, who doesn’t enjoy a good barbecue on the waterfront?

Look for a bigger and better event as the festival grows.

— Editor Shea Van Hoy

CHEERS

... to plans by members of The Salvation Army, Floyd County Community Housing Development and Interfaith Community Council for at least examining opening a new homeless shelter.

Issues at Haven House Services Inc. — which operates a shelter in Jeffersonville — have been well-documented.

If the new group is willing to take on the effort, it should be well-organized, given the track record of the organizations involved.

— Editor Shea Van Hoy

CHEERS

... to those who helped clean the banks of the Ohio River during the 2009 River Sweep event.

— The Evening News staff

CHEERS

... to Miss Clark County 2009 Amy Herrmann and the nine other young women who participated in the pageant on Thursday. Amy, an 18-year-old freshman at Ivy Tech, will serve as the official ambassador to this year’s Clark County 4-H Fair, which is set for July 11-18. Make sure you look for her during the fair to wish her well in her campaign as she represents Clark County in the Miss Indiana pageant at the Indiana State Fair in August.

— Presentation editor Amy Huffman-Branham

READER CHEERS

... to the American Cancer Society for putting on such a fun and beneficial event as Relay for Life, which was held at Jeffersonville High School on June 12, 2009, in which Clark County raised more than $172,000 for cancer research. The Women of the Moose are proud to say we are participants of this great event and we would invite all residents of Clark County to come join in the fun for men, women and children alike. What a great time we all have and benefit a great cause at the same time.

— Stella Weatherbee, Sellersburg

READER JEERS

... to attendees of Jeffersonville High School’s recent commencement ceremonies who didn’t heed the request to hold their applause during the ceremony.

Definition of the word respect: To avoid violation of or interference with. This was not displayed at the recent commencement of the class of 2009 at Jeffersonville High School on June 6. Mr. Morris, the principal, requested the audience to hold their applause (and I’m sure jubilation) until all graduates received their diplomas.

Thus, soon after the shouting and yelling began when certain graduates received their diplomas. This was very disgusting to hear. No wonder so many of our young people do not know the words respect or responsibility when some adults cannot heed a request for an hour and a half. This type of behavior has gone on year after year. When will it come to an end? Shame on all of you that were there and created the noise so we could not hear other graduates’ names.

— Beverly Jones, Jeffersonville
