The Clarksville boys’ basketball team earned a weekend sweep against two Clark County rivals, concluding with a 57-38 win over visiting New Washington on Saturday.
The aspect of the game that impressed General coach Scott Matthews was how different Saturday’s win over New Washington was than Friday’s victory over Providence.
On Friday, Clarksville senior Stephen Reeves dominated Providence with 25 points and 18 rebounds. On Saturday, with Reeves in foul trouble for much of the contest, Clarksville’s guards more than compensated.
“It’s always a tough weekend because when we play Providence we play a specific way. When we play New Washington, we have to flip a switch and try to get after them,” Matthews said. “It was two good wins for us.”
Clarksville senior Landon Glidewell finished with 15 points, six steals and five assists. Junior Tyler Merchant added 14 points and four steals.
“I thought (Landon) also handled the ball really well,” Matthews said. “Hopefully, this will kind of get him going and he’ll become a dependable second scorer along with Reeves, and relieve a lot of pressure for our team. The other guys are starting to chip in and play their roles really well as well.”
Even with Reeves in foul trouble, he still had a decent night. He finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, but did not hit his first field goal until Clarksville’s first possession of the second half.
Reeves wasn’t the only one in foul trouble. The officials whistled 28 total fouls (14 on each team) and 34 foul shots attempted in the first half.
“It was a physical game,” Matthews said.
New Washington (2-7) had three players with nine points apiece — Vincent Minton, Josh Leezer and Ryan Rager. Minton led the Mustangs with four rebounds.
Clarksville (3-7) will try to earn its first Mid-Southern Conference win next Friday when it travels to Corydon Central. New Washington will host Henryville in a Southern Athletic Conference contest on Friday.
• Hornets earn second win of weekend: Henryville picked up its second victory of the weekend as it defeated Trinity Lutheran at Furnish Gymnasium, 49-44.
Holding a 38-36 heading into the fourth quarter, the Hornets (4-6) outscored the Cougars 11-8 in the stanza thanks to 5-of-7 free-throw shooting.
Skyler Brooks paced Henryville with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Teammate Cory Munk tallied 15 points. The Hornets forced 23 Trinity turnovers.
“They’re a pretty good team, and it was a good weekend for us,” Henryville head coach Perry Hunter said. “Hopefully, we’re heading in the right direction.”
The Hornets will try to extend their winning streak to three games on Tuesday when they host Rock Creek Christian.
• Pioneers shut down Shawe: Providence held host Shawe Memorial to six points in the first half and prevailed 43-29.
The Hilltoppers scored all six first-half points on free throws, as the Pioneers (6-4) built a 22-6 advantage at intermission.
Providence senior Johnelle Hardin recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
“When you hold a team to six points at halftime, you’ve done a good job. (Hardin) played a terrific game,” Pioneers’ head coach Lou Lefevre said.
Providence will travel to Jeffersonville next Saturday.

• Pirates lose heartbreaker at Brownstown: Brownstown scored six points in the final 40 seconds of regulation to knock off visiting Charlestown, 41-39.
With the Pirates (4-9, 1-4 Mid-Southern Conference) leading 39-35, the Braves’ Kassie Kovert was fouled while attempting a 3-point shot. Kovert made her first two free throws to pull Brownstown within two.
Kovert missed the third foul shot, but teammate Whitney Tormoehlen got the rebound and drew another Charlestown foul. Tormoehlen proceeded to make both free throws to deadlock the game at 39.
After misfiring on a field goal with nine seconds left, Charlestown again fouled Kovert, who nailed two more free throws with a second to go to seal the win.
“As far as a regular-season game, it was the hardest loss I’ve had since I’ve been here,” Pirates’ assistant coach Rick Myers said. “It was the best 31 minutes we’ve played all year.”
Charlestown was 11-of-29 from the stripe, including 7-of-18 in the final quarter. Brownstown converted 16-of-19 foul shots.
Amanda Miller paced the Pirates with 11 points. They will visit Pekin Eastern on Tuesday.
• Warriors fall to Washington Catholic: Christian Academy of Indiana’s losing streak grew to four with a 47-33 loss to visiting Washington Catholic.
Kelsey Biggs led the Warriors (6-9) with 10 points. They will host Cannelton on Monday.
