DAR fundraiser set for Sunday in New Albany

Antique appraisals, silent auction to benefit Scribner House

Ever wonder how much something is worth?

Maybe it is that old picture that has been handed down from generation to generation, or an antique piece of glassware.

Sunday is the chance to get that item appraised.

Members of the Piankeshaw Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution will host an event from 2 to 5 p.m. that day at the Scribner House, 106 E. Main St., New Albany. Not only will Doug Harritt be available to appraise items, there also will be a silent auction.

The money raised will go to refurbish the Scribner House — the oldest framed house in New Albany — which is owned by the Daughters.

“This is the first fundraiser we have ever tried to do. We don’t receive proceeds from anything else,” said Terri Waggoner, who is organizing the silent auction. “We raise money in our gift shop and from donations, but that is it.”

Harritt will donate his time to appraise items, which can include anything but firearms or jewelry. The cost is $10 for one item or $25 for three items.

Waggoner also said there are more than 52 items available to bid on in the silent auction, including a family membership to the YMCA, a handmade cherry wood washstand and various movie and dinner certificates.

“I think it’s going to be big,” Waggoner said. “We have been working on this since before Christmas. We asked Caesars to help us and they said they would, but we would have to show that we are trying to help ourselves.”

The Daughters has about 80 members. The group holds its meeting at the Scribner House, which it purchased from Harriett Scribner in 1917, along with its annual Christmas Tea. Other than that, it’s open for school tours and by appointment only.

Waggoner said the home needs several upgrades, including new windows and wiring.

“It’s hard to keep the house up,” Waggoner said. “We try to do the best we can. It needs expensive items.”
