Election protection hotline available

By DANIEL SUDDEATH
Daniel.Suddeath@newsandtribune.com

After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Indiana voters need to show state-issued photo ID at the polls last week, some people may be confused on what that might entail.

A nonpartisan voter hotline will be staffed today by Election Protection, a national coalition of voting-rights advocates that includes the Brennan Center at the New York University School of Law, as well as the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

According to Tim Bradley of the Brennan Center, members of these associations, along with officials from the Indiana NAACP, will staff phones until 7:30 today to make sure that voters know their rights if they encounter any difficulties.

Election Protection was formed after the 2000 election, when millions of Americans, primarily in minority communities, were denied their right to vote, according to Bradley. The hotline phone number is 866-OUR-VOTE, and you can find out more information by visiting the Web site www.866ourvote.org.
