Interstate 64 closures pushed back

By DANIEL SUDDEATH

Road work on Interstate 64 scheduled for last weekend has been rescheduled for Friday through Sunday because of rain, according to a news release from Indiana Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Marvin Jenkins.

Beginning at 11 p.m. Friday, two lanes of I-64 in each direction will be closed from the Sherman Minton Bridge to approximately 500 feet west. Each direction will have one lane open.

The ramp from Spring Street in New Albany to I-64 eastbound will be closed as part of the construction work. The suggested alternate route to I-64 eastbound will be I-64 westbound to the Ind. 64 interchange and back onto I-64 eastbound.

Gohmann Asphalt of Clarksville will be patching the roadway and Jenkins said crews will work around the clock in hopes of finishing before nightfall on Sunday, depending on the weather.

The work is part of the $3.4 million resurfacing project of I-64 from the Kentucky state line to the Ind. 64 interchange. The project has a completion date of Aug. 2.

Additionally, lane restrictions for I-64 between the Ind. 135 interchange in Harrison County and the Ind. 66 interchange in Crawford County in both directions began Monday.

Traffic has been restricted to one lane for short stretches on I-64 while asphalt widening is being completed in preparation for a future traffic switch.

As part of the road work, several bridges within the construction project area will be upgraded. The work is part of Gov. Mitch Daniels’ Major Moves highway program, which is scheduled to be completed by 2015, and will include more than 200 new construction and 200 major highway preservation projects.
