A New Albany home was destroyed and four people were evacuated Wednesday afternoon during a fire.

New Albany Fire Department Chief Matt Juliot said the department received a call of an active fire at 625 W. Fifth St. When firefighters arrived, flames were visible, and there was heavy smoke coming from the second story of the house, he said.

Four people were inside the home when the fire began and all made it out safely.

Firefighters were dispatched at 12:23 p.m., and Juliot said it took about 30 minutes to have the fire under control. He said three-quarters of the house was a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
