Cause of King Street fire still undetermined

A fire on the 1600 block of King Street in New Albany is still under investigation. The fire was reported by a neighbor at about 10:40 a.m. June 10.

Sgt. Brodie Wilson of the New Albany Fire Department said the victim who was taken to Floyd Memorial Hospital and Health Service with serious injuries because of burns and smoke inhalation is doing much better.

The pet Dalmatian, Apollo, had to be euthanized. He inhaled smoke and was the first dog resuscitated using new equipment.

“Apollo had to be euthanized due to the severe brain issues he was having,” said Dr. Alexis Wallace, veterinarian at Ridgeview Animal Clinic.

The dog lived for about 10 days after the fire, but Wallace knew from the beginning that his chances of survival were slim. The smoke had caused serious damages to the organs.

Workers at the animal clinic credited the New Albany Police Department with making Apollo much more comfortable by providing him with pure oxygen on the scene.
