More New Albany riverfront concerts planned

New Albany Mayor Doug England, the Clark-Floyd Counties Convention and Tourism Bureau and The Tribune are partnering to present another free concert on the city’s riverfront.

The event is scheduled to run from 6 to 11 p.m. on Aug. 30, and will feature local artists The Lost Boys and Old School among other area bands.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase, similar to the recent Independence Day celebration held at the same spot.

This time the concert will be held ahead of Labor Day weekend.

The Riverfront Amphitheatre is a perfect location for hosting various concerts and performances that would support the city, said City Councilman Steve Price.

“We have to get our riverfront going,” Price said. “It will just make the whole city better and get the downtown going.”

Price’s band, The River Rats, will be playing the event. They also performed at the Independence Day show. He would like to see at least one concert on the riverfront each month.

“We need to start in the spring and carry it up to Harvest Homecoming,” Price said, adding different musical genres and styles could be featured each month.

Members of the New Albany Board of Works and Public Safety said Tuesday they are making preparations for road and boat ramp closures for the event.

Bands playing the event are Burning Bridges, The River Rats, Old School, The Lost Boys and a tribute to Elvis by John Eldon Brown.

Another concert is scheduled for Saturday at the amphitheatre. Several youth and community outreach organizations under the umbrella of Our Community Cares are hosting the event that will run from 4 to 8 p.m.

In order to facilitate the concert, the board approved closing the city’s boat ramp beginning at 9 p.m. Friday until 9 p.m. Saturday.

Additionally, Water Street will be closed beginning at East Sixth Street and continuing past the amphitheatre. The road will close at 9 a.m. Saturday and be reopened at 9 p.m. that evening.
