Jazz sculpture tour to reach New Albany

A bronze likeness of jazz legend Hoagy Carmichael will be displayed in New Albany for a week this month before its permanent installation in Bloomington.

The statue depicts Carmichael, who died in 1981 at age 81, leaning on a piano with one arm and playing a note with his other hand. It is scheduled to be displayed in the Speakeasy Jazz Club Oct. 19 and Oct. 20, then in IU Southeast’s Ogle Center from Oct. 22 through Oct. 25.

Two-hour jazz performances will conclude the Speakeasy exhibit, beginning at 8:30 Oct. 19 and 9 o’clock Oct. 20.

Carmichael was born in Bloomington and attended Indiana University’s undergraduate program and law school. He was a nationally prominent songwriter, bandleader and singer.

He also acted in 14 films and won a 1951 Academy Award for his original song “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening” from the film “Here Comes the Groom.”

IU alumnus Michael Livingston McAuley created the life-sized sculpture and will speak at Speakeasy at 1 p.m. Oct. 20.

Zoning board allows church use

The New Albany Board of Zoning Appeals gave approval Tuesday night for a former printing shop to become a church.

The building at 2729 Paoli Pike is the former home of Design Printing & Specialties.

Applicant Chris Jones said a small congregation in the east end of Louisville might be moving in, but no deal is finalized. He declined to comment further.



Mayor proclaims today Reconciliation Day

New Albany Mayor James Garner proclaimed today as Reconciliation day.

The observance of Reconciliation Day was inspired by a Colombian celebration honoring St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of courteous relationships among all creatures, and was celebrated last year in Indiana communities such as Indianapolis, North Vernon, Columbus and Nashville.

The goal of the day is to focus on the resolution of conflicts among friends, family, neighbors and adversaries the proclamation reads.
