New Albany offers options for removing leaves, yard debris

Garbage hauler to collect leaves during normal runs

Southern Indiana Waste Services will collect bagged leaves and other yard waste during regular garbage stops for New Albany residents beginning Nov. 2.

The service will end Nov. 28, with Southern Indiana Waste to take up to 15 bags of leaves from each residence a week. The city’s garbage hauler will also collect bundled yard wastes, including limbs no greater than 3-inches in diameter and no longer than 4 feet.

As part of the three-tiered effort, the city drainage crews will vacuum leaves raked and placed along curbside ditches from Nov. 2 to Dec. 4. Residents are asked not to place leaves near catch basins or culverts, which would block storm drainage during rain events.

According to a city news release, drainage crews will attempt to make at least two passes along New Albany streets during November.

The third part of the effort calls on the New Albany Street Department to pickup yard debris not collected by Southern Indiana Waste on an “on-call” schedule.

Mayor Doug England wants residents to make every effort to rake leaves and deposit yard waste streetside next month.

“City forces can accomplish a thorough cleanup of the city during November if residents cooperate with this schedule and lend a neighborly helping hand to those facing difficulties due to age or disabilities,” he said.

“As we approach the holiday season, we should not forget those who are least among us.”

Residents can request pickup of yard debris not covered by Southern Indiana Waste by calling the street department at 812-948-5352.
