New Albany officials promote Halloween safety

City officials are asking trick-or-treaters and their parents to be mindful of safety concerns for Halloween Saturday.

New Albany’s time allotted for trick-or-treating is from 6 to 8:30 p.m., as set by the Board of Public Works and Safety.

“We encourage all trick-or-treaters to be vigilant of their surroundings, especially when crossing streets,” Mayor Doug England stated in a news release. “Safety is city government’s top concern for the Halloween holiday.”

New Albany Police Chief Greg Crabtree said there will be additional coverage of neighborhoods for Halloween.

“Our extra patrols are not just for safety, but also to be a positive presence in the neighborhoods. Some officers might even have candy to hand out, too,” he said.

Trick-or-treating safety tips:

• A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children. Use a flash light so you can be seen by others.

• Stay in a group, walk slowly and communicate where you are going.

• Only trick-or-treat in neighborhoods you are familiar with, and at homes that have a porch light on.

• Stay on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk. If no sidewalk is available, walk facing traffic at the farthest edge of the roadway.

• Never cut across yards or use alleys.

• Never enter a stranger’s home or car while trick-or-treating.

• Obey all traffic and pedestrian regulations. Only cross the street in established crosswalks as a group.

• Before crossing a street, remove any mask or accessory that might limit eyesight.

• Don’t assume you have the right-of-way. Motorists may have trouble seeing trick-or-treaters.

• Never consume unwrapped food items or open beverages that may be offered. Treats should not be consumed until they are thoroughly checked by an adult.

• Immediately notify the New Albany Police Department of any suspicious or unlawful activity.
