IUS hosts 2009 Chancellor’s Medallion Dinner

A limited number of tickets remain available for the Indiana University Southeast 2009 Chancellor’s Medallion Dinner at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 at Huber’s Orchard and Winery.

The silent auction begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is at 7 p.m. This year’s dinner will be emceed by Wayne Perkey, former WHAS Radio personality.

Tickets are $100 per person. Corporate table sponsorships are available. Contact the IUS Office of Development at 812-941-2464 for ticket information.

This year’s event honors two deserving recipients —  Jim Keith, executive director of the Clark-Floyd Counties Convention and Tourism Bureau, and the late Lillian Yeager, former dean of the school of nursing at IUS.

The Chancellor’s Medallion is the highest honor presented by the chancellor of IUS. It is given to individuals who have rendered distinguished service to the university and to the community, have given their talents in the promotion of human welfare and community well-being, and who — through their integrity, sensitivity, and commitment — serve as models for students and alumni of IUS.

Brandon’s House craft fair Dec. 5

Brandon's House Counseling Center, Inc., in New Albany, will be hosting its first-ever arts and crafts fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 5, in the Fellowship Hall at DePauw Methodist Church, 925 Vincennes St.

If you have homemade arts and crafts to sell, or know someone who does, and would like information about reserving a table to show and sell your crafts, contact Angel Walsh at angelwalsh@hotmail.com or at 812-786-7805.

The cost to reserve a table is $25 until Nov. 30; $30 after Nov. 30. Two tables may be rented by the same person for $35, or $60 after Nov. 30. People may bring their own 6-foot table and rent space for $20, or $35 after Nov. 30. Lunch will be available.

NAACP Freedom Fund lunch is Nov. 21

The New Albany branch of the NAACP will host its 2009 Freedom Fund Luncheon on Nov. 21. The luncheon will be held at Culbertson West, 904 East Main Street, New Albany, and is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Guest speaker will be Jeff Johnson, a Washington, D.C. based award-winning journalist, social activist and political commentator.

Restaurants offering vets free meals

Applebee’s will offer free meals to veterans and active military showing military ID, photo or uniform all day Wednesday, and Golden Corral will offer a free meal to veterans and active military on the honor system from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 16.

To qualify for the free Applebee’s meal, participants must present one of the following: a U.S. Uniform Services Identification Card; U.S. Uniform Services Retired Identification Card; Current Leave and Earnings Statement; Veterans organization card (American Legion and VFW); photograph in uniform; DD214; citation or commendation; or be in uniform.

Golden Corral’s ninth-annual military appreciation is offered with no proof required, other than your word that you are a veteran.

Disability Awareness Month materials now available

The Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities will unveil its Disability Awareness Month 2010 campaign at the annual Conference for People with Disabilities Nov. 16, but starting today, Hoosiers may order free Awareness Month materials to begin planning the many important disability awareness activities that take place across the state each March.

The 2010 Disability Awareness Month theme is “Free Your Mind.” Material includes information and activity planning packets, with topics ranging from planning disability-focused art contests to increasing ADA awareness in a business. In addition, the Council offers theme-specific materials, including posters, bookmarks and stickers. Visit IndianaDisabilityAwareness.org for more information.
