DISTRICT V BASEBALL: New Albany stars show power in opening-night rout of HYR

CHARLESTOWN — Defending state champion New Albany showed that it is going to be a force to be reckoned with again in 2008.

New Albany opened its 11-12 all-star tournament run with a 12-3 win over Highlander Youth Recreation on Saturday in Charlestown.

The seven-time defending District V champions opened the game by showing their power, and never let off the gas until the end.

After Grant Goad reached on an infield hit in the bottom of the first inning, Kyle Landrum followed with a two-run home run to give New Albany the lead for good.

In the third inning, New Albany scored seven times and had two more homers. Tucker Marcum led off the inning with a home run and, later, Mick Wahking hit a grand slam to give them an 8-0 lead. By the end of the third, New Albany already led 9-0.

“Our power is starting to come around,” New Albany coach Aaron Goad said. “We’ve been hitting the ball well, but now we’re starting to get some distance on it. This group is really starting to hit the ball now.”

Landrum pitched three perfect innings before giving up three runs in the fourth. After Landrum walked Wyatt Shanks with the bases loaded, he was relieved by Brady Parr. Parr allowed two more harmless runs to score in the fourth, but then held HYR scoreless in the final two innings.

“Brady did a great job of shutting them down,” Goad said.

Grant Goad and Marcum scored three times for New Albany.
