SOCCER: Dogs, Highlanders each win easily at NA Sectional

By KEVIN HARRIS

As expected, the New Albany and Floyd Central boys’ soccer teams each cruised to victories in their first-round games of the New Albany Sectional at Prosser Field on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs thumped North Harrison in the sectional opener, 8-0. In the nightcap, the Highlanders defeated Corydon for the second time this week, 5-1.

Floyd (12-2-3) and New Albany will meet in the first semifinal at 5 this afternoon. The second semi will pit Silver Creek against Salem at approximately 7 p.m.

Senior Stephan Kossis was the star for the Bulldogs against the Cougars. Kossis scored three goals and distributed two assists. Teammate Brandon McLaughlin also had a productive night with two goals and two assists.

New Albany senior Keegan O’Connor kicked in a pair of goals, and teammate Sheldon Albertson had one goal. Recording assists for the Bulldogs were Alex Blum, Nick Blackwell and Kameron Jenkins.

Junior Jordan Adams led the way for the Highlanders once again. After kicking in two goals in games against Corydon and Seymour this week, Adams scored three against the Panthers on Wednesday. Juniors Chase Holland and Alec Steele each kicked in a goal for Floyd.

The Highlanders responded well after playing Seymour to a 2-2 tie on Tuesday, as both teams ended up with a share of the Hoosier Hills Conference title.

Floyd and New Albany met in last year’s Floyd Sectional final. After playing to a 2-2 tie after regulation and two overtime periods, the Highlanders prevailed in a penalty-kick shootout.

Floyd also beat the Bulldogs in the 2006 Floyd Sectional championship, 1-0.
