New methods tried to teach women about safe fish by Purdue University experts

WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue University food toxicology experts are turning to the Internet, an iPhone application and other methods to educate pregnant and nursing women about which fish they can safely eat without harming their babies.

Women who eat fish tainted with pollutants such as mercury can harm their developing fetuses or breast-fed babies.

Purdue researchers experts created a Web site — http://fn.cfs.purdue.edu/fish4health/ — with fish consumption safety tips for all 50 states.

The site includes an iPhone application and a YouTube video on safe fish consumption, as well as a wallet card with fish consumption tips that can be printed out.

Purdue professor Charles Santerre (San-TEHR) says the goal is to keep babies healthy.
