GIRLS' TRACK AND FIELD: Devils ignore coach’s prognostication, win sectional title
JEFFERSONVILLE — While breaking down the seedings for this year’s Jeffersonville girls’ track sectional at Blair Field, Jeffersonville coach Tom Kendall came away weary of his squad’s chances of recapturing its spot as champion.
The seeding said the Red Devils were solidly stuck in second behind defending champion Madison, meaning his team needed to rise to the occasion to reclaim the first-place trophy.

At least that’s how it seemed on Saturday morning, after pitcher Megan Stirn and the Jeffersonville softball team shut down Jennings County in a 7-0 victory that left the Red Devils champions of the Hoosier Hills Conference for the first time since 1998.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Kulwicki’s single puts Floyd in HHC final
FLOYDS KNOBS — Thanks to some extra-inning heroics on Friday night at Highlander Field, the Floyd Central baseball team put itself in position to do something it has never done before — repeat as Hoosier Hills Conference champions.
Keith Kulwicki’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Highlanders a 5-4 victory over Jeffersonville in the HHC Tournament semifinals. Floyd (14-8) will vie for its second straight conference title at 11 a.m. today when it hosts Jennings County, a 6-2 semifinal winner over Bedford North Lawrence on Friday.

Poole swings for fences in Jeff victory
NEW ALBANY — This meeting between the Jeffersonville and New Albany baseball teams was much closer.
In fact, it came down to just two swings of the bat.
But those two swings belonged the Red Devil slugger Cody Poole, who crushed two home runs, had five RBIs and led Jeff to a 10-4 victory over their archrivals in the first round of the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament at Mt. Tabor Field on Monday.

BULLDOGS LOSE A LEGEND: Stan Sajko dies
Stan Sajko was an outstanding athlete at Indiana State and was a hall of fame baseball coach at New Albany High School. He came to NAHS in 1948, coached the baseball team for 25 years where he didn’t have a losing record in his first 22 seasons, and finished his career with a winning percentage of 72 percent.

Friday afternoon at Christian Academy of Indiana, Warriors pitcher Justin Sturgeon made April 18 a date he will remember forever.
