Recent Charlestown High School graduates Damon Vest and Cameron Metzger have both been selected to the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 3A All-State first team for the 2009 season.

BASKETBALL: Local squads keeping busy this summer
New Albany star Donnie Hale’s recent oral commitment to Purdue has been the talk of the area basketball scene. But with this weekend marking the end of IHSAA-allowed high school team play until later next month, the attention again returns to AAU for the July circuit of camps and tournament.

The New Albany star will stay in-state after his senior year of high school to play for Matt Painter’s Purdue program.
Hale, a 6-foot-8 forward, is relieved the recruiting process is behind him.

FRANKLIN — In a season in which both sides battled head-to-head from week to week, it only seemed fitting to see both Floyd Central and Providence once again standing side-by-side in the pairings at the IHSAA boys’ golf state finals.

GOLF: Floyd, Providence reach final round at state, a first for Clark-Floyd area
FRANKLIN — Last Friday, the Floyd Central and Providence boys’ golf teams made history at the Seymour Regional. For the first time in 16 years, two Clark-Floyd area squads qualified for the IHSAA State Finals when the Highlanders placed second and the Pioneers were third at regional.

ON THE SPOT: Trey Pfund
A year ago, Trey Pfund found himself contending near the top of the standings at the IHSAA State Finals in Franklin.
After the first day of last year’s state finals, Pfund was positioned for a run at the state title. He was within five shots of the leader, but could not carry over that momentum. Pfund shot 5-over par on the second day of competition at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course and finishing tied for 16th.
This year, Pfund is back at it again.

In the spring of 2001, Floyd Central High School hired a new coach to take over its already solid boys’ golf program.
That man was Floyds Knobs resident Mike Cason.
Since then, all he has done is make the program even stronger.

INDIANAPOLIS — It took until the bottom of the sixth inning for the scoreboard to light up the evening at Ben Davis High School.
For the Floyd Central softball team, it would have been better to have left it off.

Floyd, Providence each advance to state
Heading down the final stretch of holes at the Seymour Regional, Floyd Central coach Mike Cason knew it would be close.
The Highlanders were part of the groups that would be the last off the course, and Cason had a pretty good idea of what they would need to shoot to advance to the State Finals.

Providence’s last postseason visit to Austin ended in questions.
The Pioneers dropped a lopsided sectional loss in last season’s Class 2A Austin Sectional and then were faced with who would fill the holes vacated from a 10-man senior class that departed after the 2008 season.
