Visiting Floyd Central overpowered Jeff in four of five matches to post a 4-1 victory over the Red Devils on the tennis courts Tuesday.
Each Highlander victory came in straight sets, including a sweep in the doubles spots.
At No. 1 doubles, Emma LaDuke and Kayla Prusinski defeated Susan DiTeresa and MaCauley Murphy, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2, Alyssa Botkins and Kayla Oldham upended Danielle Eckert and Landi Gaither 6-0, 6-3.
The other two victories for Floyd came from Kelsey Wisman, who beat Katherine Clark at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2, and Ann Hunt, who prevailed 6-3, 6-4 over Dee Roehm at No. 3 singles.
The victory for Jeff was by Michelle Roberts, who rolled 6-1, 6-1 over Chelsea Burch at the No. 2 singles position.
“Floyd Central has a nice team and the talent pool they have is very deep. It was nice to see Michelle Roberts play an excellent match,” said Jeff coach Mark Reilly. “Her game came together very nice tonight. I still think as a team we can make improvements the rest of the year with our play. The team is starting to understand the things they need to do, but putting them into the match is still hard for them.”
• Mustangs suffer narrow defeat: Even without regular No. 1 singles player Lindsey Krohn, host New Washington still won two singles matches in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Austin.
Sammi Sarver moved into Krohn’s No. 1 spot, falling to Katy McIntosh 6-0, 6-0. Kala Dieterlen moved up to two singles to beat Sidney Mease 6-3, 6-2, and Megan Vanwie won for the Mustangs in the No. 3 position, defeating Heather Taylor 6-3, 4-6, 7-6.
“We shuffled out lineup quite a bit and I was pleased with the results,” said New Wash coach Wayne Davis. “Megan Vanwie stepped up at No. 3 singles and won a very tough match. We’ve come a long way in the last three weeks.”
The Mustangs travel to Shawe today.
• Clarksville nips North Harrison: Deahna Welcher led a singles sweep for Clarksville in a 3-2 victory over North Harrison.
Welcher beat Wynn Shroyer at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2. Tiffany Fitzpatrick and Jaime Wilkerson also prevailed in their matches for Clarksville.
BASEBALL
• St. X nips Highlanders: Host St. Xavier scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to retake the lead, and then retired Floyd Central in order in the top of the seventh to post a 4-3 victory.
The Highlanders (8-6) were held scoreless through five innings, and trailed 2-0 entering the six. But an RBI double by Kyle Naville plated Dustin Vincent and Daniel Huhnerkoch to get Floyd on the board, and Ben Stillman scored Naville with a double of his own to put his team on top.
Down 3-2, the Tigers managed two runs in the bottom of the frame on Floyd reliever Nick Biery (0-1).
“We just couldn’t hold them off,” said Floyd coach Casey LaDuke. “We played head-to-head with them, but came up a little short.”
Floyd will host Clarksville on Friday.
• Jeff moves to 10-2: Ryan Pierce, Sam Burke and Mitchell Mattingly all doubled to help Jeffersonville post a 12-4 victory over North Harrison on the road.
The game was tied at 3-3 through four innings, but Jeff (10-2) exploded for six in the top half of the fifth to grab control for good.
Nick Politte got the victory on the mound for Jeff, improving to 2-0.
• Pirates punish Cubs: Host Charlestown put together 13 hits — including a two-run home run from Cameron Metzger — and built a 7-2 lead en route to an 11-3 victory over Madison.
Bryan Williams picked up the win on the mound for the Pirates (6-4). He pitched all seven innings, surrendering seven hits and three earned runs, walking two with three strikeouts. Williams moved to 3-1 on the year.
Madison (2-6) took a 2-0 lead after its first at-bat, but Charlestown answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, all coming with two outs. Singles by Metzger, Clayton Merschbrock, Joel Rodriguez began the rally, and it was capped by a two-run double from Travis Brown.
Matt Wyatt had an RBI double in the bottom of the second, and Metzger followed with a two-run shot to give the Pirates some breathing room.
“We hit the ball very well today,” said Pirate coach Rocky Romans. “It was unfortunate we fell behind early, but we got out there and got it right back. Everyone was very focused.”
Charlestown will visit Clarksville on Thursday in the Coaches vs. Cancer game. Proceeds from the event will benefit the American Cancer Society.
• Strong relief propels CAI: Evan Strong tossed three scoreless innings in relief as CAI moved to 5-4 with an 11-4 victory over West Washington.
Strong entered in the fifth inning and proceeded to keep the Senators’ bats at bay. He struck out five and walked two to get his first win of the season.
“We went to our relievers early and really got more out of Evan than we could have imagined,” said CAI coach Ryan Wheeler. “He gave us a huge effort.”
Nick McKain homered and added two doubles in the victory. The Warriors will host South Central on Thursday.
SOFTBALL
• Floyd gets win No. 10: The Highlanders tallied five doubles in a 6-1 victory over host Seymour.
Cherrod Gwaltney led the attack with two of the five two-base hits and Katie Phillips, Libby Wright and Brittany Mills each added one in the victory.
“We’re satisfied with our production throughout the order,” said Floyd coach Joe Witten, who’s squad had 12 hits total. “We improved on our base running today and that helped us get some runs up in the early going.”
Rena Philpot struck out 10 in four innings to improve to 6-1 on the season. Randa Harbison pitched the final three innings to notch her fifth save of the year.
Floyd will host Henryville on Friday.
• Clarksville shuts down Brownstown: Alex Conklin smacked three hits and Taylor Carta drove in a pair of runs to help Clarksville defeat host Brownstown, 5-1.
Amber Wingler fanned seven and surrendered only two hits in the victory.
“She pretty much handled them all day,” said Clarksville coach Tim Hauber about his pitcher. “She overcame a tough start and got the job done.”
Kelsey Becker and Jessica Bisinger both doubled in the victory.
“We hit it pretty good,” Hauber said. “Our defense was shaky in spots but we hit it well enough to cover that up.”
Clarksville travels to Jeff today.
• Charlestown moves over .500 on the year: The Pirates pounded out 20 hits and got a combined no-hitter from Amanda Miller and Cassie Nichols in a 21-0 victory over Christian Academy of Indiana.
Miller pitched only one inning to improve to 5-4 this season, while Nichols tossed the last four frames, notching seven strikeouts.
Miller tripled and Mikinnah Bussey doubled in the victory for Charlestown (5-4), which exploded for 14 runs in the bottom of the second.
“(Christian Academy) was very sportsmanlike and very respectful,” said Charlestown coach Kevin Zollman. “They kept playing hard and kept battling, even through a lopsided game.”
It was the second game for the resurrected CAI program, which returned to play this season after a long absence.
Charlestown will host Providence today.
BOYS’ GOLF
• Hornets barely hold off Pirates: Henryville notched a combined score of 186 to tip Charlestown by a single stroke in a quadrangular meet at Hidden Creek’s Creek 9.
Lanesville was next with a 218, while Rock Creek finished with a 246.
The Hornets’ Nick Campbell was the match medalist, firing a 39 on the par-35 course. Cameron Tucker had a 46, Taylor Weeks a 48, and Caleb Robertson a 53 for Henryville.
“Nick had a very good round to shoot a 39 on the most challenging course at Hidden Creek,” said Hornet coach Robin Embry. “We just need to get to where we aren’t counting 50’s, but we’re still happy with Caleb’s 53. It enabled is to get the win.”
Andrew Smith had a 44 to lead Charlestown, while Eric Wise shot a 49 to pace the Lions.
Henryville will meet New Washington and Silver Creek at Hidden Creek today.
TRACK AND FIELD
• Dogs, Devils earn split: The Jeffersonville boys’ track team won 10 individual events to outscore rival New Albany, 67-56.
But the Bulldog girls exacted a measure of revenge, getting two wins from Hali Alexander as part of their nine individual victories in a 63-56 triumph over the Devils.
Melvin Posey took the 100 and 200-meter dashes for New Albany, but Jeff fought back in the distance events. Dan Coats claimed the 800 and 1600-meter races, while Joey Coats won the 3200 for Jeff.
Toba Omotinugubon won both the discus and the shot put for Jeff.
Alexander, one of the area’s best hurdlers, continued a stellar sophomore campaign by taking 110-meter race by three seconds, and also won the 300-meter hurdles. New Albany also won two of the three relay races on the girls’ side.
Jeff stayed close with wins from Shanice Gholson in the 100 and 200-meter races, while Megan Blackburn won the 800.
• Henryville rolls in four-way: Henryville won 13 of 16 events en route to an easy victory over Southwestern, Madison Shawe, and Rock Creek Christian.
Junior Katie Spellman led the way for Henryville with victories in the 800 and 1,600 meter runs. The Hornets also swept three relay races in the victory.
