HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Brownout --Bulldog pitchers shuts out Generals

New Albany pitcher Graham Brown gave up one hit in six innings on Wednesday, helping the Bulldogs post a 6-0 victory over Clarksville at Mt. Tabor Field.

Brown struck out seven batters and allowed three walks as he won for the first time this season. Nathan Poff and Jason Cruse each doubled and Sean Godfrey had a triple for the Dogs (8-5).

Clarksville, which was limited to just one hit while committing seven errors, fell to 3-9 with the setback. Pitcher John Bramer took the loss, allowing five runs in five innings.

“Anytime you commit more errors than hits by the other team it’s going to be a struggle,” said Clarksville coach Brian James. “We made a lot of changes in the field and we made some plays behind John, but we also had too many mistakes.”

Clarksville hosts Charlestown today in a “Coaches Vs. Cancer Game” at Wayne Stock Field. Proceeds from the contest will be donated to the American Cancer Society. New Albany will travel to Evansville Friday for a split doubleheader against Evansville North and Bosse.

• Pioneers trip North Harrison: Providence totaled eight hits as it topped North Harrison, 11-3. The Pioneers scored two times in the top of the first and never looked back in the win. Johnelle Hardin keyed the attack for Providence with three hits, including a home run. Josh Smith got the victory on the mound to improve to 2-1.



SOFTBALL

• Hornets blast New Washington: The Mustangs stranded 12 runners and managed only one run in a 9-1 loss to visiting Henryville.

The Hornets scored in each of the last five innings, getting doubles from Kelcey Pierce and Amanda Embry and triples from Kelsie Kuntz and Ashley Dickerson, who was also the winning pitcher.

“If you watched the game, the score doesn’t really tell the whole story,” said New Wash assistant coach Bill Broughton. “We left 12 runners on base. We have got to get some hits and get them in when they get into scoring position.”

Danielle Vogt pitched two scoreless innings for New Wash (5-6) until being relieved by Katie Rager in the third. Jenny Schindler doubled in the loss for the Mustangs.

“It’s nice to come out with the win, but I’m not pleased with the lack of focus and intensity,” said Henryville coach Jenny Odle, whose team committed four errors. “We’re 11 games into the season and we’re making baserunning errors and looking at third strikes. Still, our pitchers are performing very well.”

• Pirates take down Pioneers in nine: Ashton Napier hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, plating Markie Floyd and leading Charlestown to a 4-3 win over Providence.

Amanda Miller improved her record to 6-4 on the season for the Pirates, going the distance while striking out two and surrendering only one earned run. Kelsey Markland took the loss for Providence (2-9).

Providence led 2-1 entering the fourth, but the Pirates tied things in the bottom of the frame. Each team scored once in the fifth to set up extra innings.

Floyd led off with a single and then stole second to set up the winning run. She moved to third on a fielder’s choice and then Napier’s two-out hit finally sealed it.

“Other than some miscues, we hit the ball well tonight,” said Charlestown coach Kevin Zollman. “We couldn’t put our hits together, but this certainly helped our level of confidence.”

Napier also doubled for Charlestown, which hosts Austin today.



GIRLS’ TENNIS

• New Albany topples Scottsburg: Host New Albany won four of five matches in straight sets as it rolled past Scottsburg.

Kylie Crecelius and Hayley Haws each scored points in singles for the Bulldogs, with each of them prevailing by scores of 6-2, 6-1.

Sarah Nale and Kaitlin Tretter picked up a No. 1 doubles win over Katie Trueblook and Jerica Helton, 6-0, 6-4, while Kaitlyn Focken and Deidre Fetz won at No. 2.

Andrea Rademacher was Scottsburg’s lone winner, beating Kylia Sullivan 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

The Dogs travel to Floyd Central today.

• Floyd breezes by North Harrison: The Highlanders prepared for today’s duel with their county rival by blanking host North Harrison, 5-0.

Kelsey Wisman, Chelsea Burch and Sandra McCaffrey took home singles wins. The team of Emma LaDuke and Kayla Prusinski was a doubles winner at the one spot, as were Jessica VanWinkle and Alyssa Botkins at No. 2.

• CAI blanks Corydon: Christian Academy of Indiana won three matches by scores of 6-0, 6-0 as they rolled by Corydon on Tuesday, 5-0.

Shawna Doty (No. 1 singles), Ashley Roach (No. 3 singles) and the No. 1 doubles team of Jenny Ingle and Sally Sturgis each swept their respective matches.

Natalie Winslow won her match at No. 2 singles and Erin Huckabone and Kayla Koerber won at the No. 2 doubles spot.



BOYS’ GOLF

• Dragons top West Clark rivals: Silver Creek combined for a team score of 157 to beat Henryville and New Washington at Hidden Creek’s Creek 9.

Brandon White fired a 1-over 36 to take match medalist honors for the Dragons. Joey David and Michael Seaton each shot a 39 and Caleb Lay had a 43 to complete the scoring for Silver Creek.

Henryville finished 29 strokes off the pace, combining for a team score of 186 — identical to the Hornets’ mark in a victory on Tuesday. Nick Campbell led the way with a 38, while Taylor Weeks had a 47 for Henryville.

“Silver Creek is very good this year and have a great group of kids,” said Henryville coach Robin Embry. “Nick has had two very good days on a tough course, but as a team we are still struggling to get that fourth score under 50. That’s what we’re working towards.”

Henryville will host Rock Creek at Champions Pointe today.



TRACK AND FIELD

• Pirate girls second at tri-meet: On Tuesday at Scottsburg, Charlestown won four events to place first in a triangular meet against Austin and the host Warriorettes.

The Pirates’ Elizabeth Stephens took first place in the long jump and 300-meter hurdles. She broke the school record in the 300 hurdles in a time of 50.48 seconds.

Teammate Katie McClaine prevailed in the 100 hurdles. McClaine and Stephens were also on the winning 400 relay team along with Brittany Logan and Samantha Farmer. Those four girls combined to finish second in the 1,600 relay.

Farmer was second in the 800, and teammate Ariel Stephens earned a runner-up finish in the shot put.

Charlestown will compete in a quadrangular meet at Southwestern next Tuesday.
