HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Wilbert fans 10 in Clarksville win

Senior T.J. Wilbert had a big day on the mound and at the plate, leading the Clarksville baseball team to an 8-3 win over Charlestown in the Coaches vs. Cancer game at Wayne Stock Field.

Wilbert was the winning pitcher, improving his record to 3-2. He tossed a complete game, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out 10. Wilbert helped himself at the plate with three hits including a double and three RBIs.

Teammate Robert Noe also had three hits, and Generals’ junior Jon Bramer smacked two hits. Eight of the nine Clarksville starters each had a hit.

“It was the most balance we’ve had on offense all year. The bats are coming around,” Generals head coach Brian James said. “We’re still committing too many errors. T.J. was just overpowering today. It was one of his better outings.”

Charlestown pitcher Cameron Metzger got the loss. Clarksville (4-9, 1-3 Mid-Southern Conference) travels to Floyd Central today. The Pirates (5-5) will host Silver Creek on Monday.

• Connon a barbarian in Hornet victory: Freshman Colan Connon went 3-for-3 with two doubles and Henryville clubbed 14 hits as a team as it beat Lanesville at home, 13-10.

“The kid has been getting big hits for us all year,” said Henryville coach Jeff Schroeder about Connan. “He gets big RBIs and for a freshman it’s not every day that you see that.”

Henryville’s top five batters hit a combined 12-for-17 in the win. Colton Dietrich had a home run and Kenny Harrell had a triple, while Taylor Stone added a double and improved to 3-1 on the mound.

“I thought this was a game where we competed a lot better,” said Schroeder. “The top of the order really hit the ball all over the field.”

Henryville will host Christian Academy on Saturday.

• Haendiges leads CAI again: Christian Academy of Indiana pitcher Trey Haendiges continued his stellar junior season, improving to 4-1 on the mound in the Warriors’ 10-3 victory over South Central.

Haendiges went the distance, striking out seven with one walk and surrendering no earned runs. The CAI defense committed five errors in the victory.

CAI (6-4) never trailed, plating a run in the first inning and two in the third. South Central (7-5) cut the gap to 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Warriors responded with six runs in their half of the sixth.

“Just all around, everyone is hitting the ball,” said CAI coach Ryan Wheeler. “We didn’t field the ball behind him (Haendiges), but he still got the job done.”

The Warriors will travel to Henryville on Saturday.

SOFTBALL

• Hornets extend Pioneer woes: It was a new day but the same story for Providence, as it dropped its eighth one-run game of the season in a 2-1 loss to Henryville at Perry Hunter Field.

The game was tied into the sixth inning when the Hornets plated a run on a triple by Kelsey Kuntz. Tosha and Carissa Embry each collected a pair of hits in the win. Amanda Embry picked up the pitching win for Henryville, which moved to 11-1 with the victory.

Hornet coach Jenny Odle declined comment after the victory.

In 12 losses this season, Providence has been beaten by two runs or fewer.

“We actually started to put the bat on the ball pretty good in this one,” said Providence coach Sean Payne. “We had a chance late to tie the game on what looked like a double by Katy Flanagan that their right fielder (Rebecca Carter) took away. It’s been our luck all year long.”

Kelsie Markland took the loss for the Pioneers (2-12), who host Presentation today.

• Clarksville wins behind Betz: Pitcher Kelly Betz relieved injured starter Amber Wingler and picked up her eighth win of the year as Clarksville defeated Salem 7-2 at Tim Hauber Field.

The Generals plated three runs in the bottom of the second and cruised from there.

“It’s a good win,” said Clarksville coach Tim Hauber. “Salem’s been playing some pretty close games all year. Offensively, we did a lot of the little things that we needed to win. We had seven sacrifice bunts and put the ball in play, making them work defensively.”

Jessica Bisinger had a triple for Clarksville (13-4, 5-2 Mid-Southern Conference). The Generals will host Henryville in a doubleheader on Saturday.

• Pirates go perfect for the week: Host Charlestown completed a 4-0 week by defeating Austin, 8-1.

Pirates starting pitcher Amanda Miller earned her fourth victory in a row. She went the distance, yielding five hits and one walk. Miller recorded four strikeouts.

At the plate for Charlestown (7-4, 3-2 MSC), Cara Rhoten had three hits with a double, Lindsey Sprinkle collected two hits with a double and a triple, and Kelsie Houchens and Ashton Napier had two hits apiece.

“I think my team’s hitting the ball well right now,” Pirates head coach Kevin Zollman said. “We’re starting to put things together.”

Charlestown will travel to Madison on Monday.

• Bulldogs fall to HHC foe: Visiting Jennings County scored five runs in its opening two at-bats and took advantage of six New Albany errors in a 7-3 victory over the Bulldogs.

The loss dropped New Albany to 7-7 on the season and made a loser out of ace Faith Griffaw. She had seven strikeouts on the day.

New Albany will meet another Hoosier Hills Conference foe on Monday, when it travels to Columbus East.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

• Doubles sweep pushes Floyd past New Albany: The Highlanders got wins in both the doubles positions and earned the one victory they needed in the singles ranks to capture a narrow 3-2 win over rival New Albany.

Kelsey Wisman dispatched Kylia Sullivan at No. 1 singles to score Floyd’s lone singles point. Emma LaDuke and Kayla Prusinski took the one doubles matchup 6-2, 6-0 over Kaitlin Tretter and Sarah Nale, and Alyssa Botkins and Jessica VanWinkle finished off the team victory by beating Deidre Fetz and Kaitlyn Focken 6-2, 6-1.

The Bulldogs still got key wins from Kylie Crecelius, a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Chelsea Burch at two singles, and Hayley Haws, who beat Allison Unruh in the No. 3 singles match.

Floyd Central will travel to Zionsville for a tournament on Saturday, where it could meet two top-10 teams in a field that includes Center Grove, Indianapolis Brebeuf and Zionsville.

• Generals deal defeat to Eastern: Clarksville swept all three singles matches to win a narrow 3-2 decision over Pekin Eastern, the Musketeers’ first loss of the season.

Deahna Welcher won a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while Tiffany Fitzpatrick and Jamie Wilkerson also posted wins in singles competition.

In doubles, Ashley Lind and Breanna Shireman fell at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1. Jazzmine Rolon and Jazzman Camacho lost 6-1, 6-1 in the two doubles spot for the Generals.

• CAI rolls again: Christian Academy won four of its matches by scores of 6-0, 6-0 as it swept Crawford County, 5-0.

Shawna Doty, Natalie Winslow and Ashley Roach scored three of the perfect victories, as did the No. 1 doubles squad of Sally Sturgis and Jenny Ingle. Abbigail Uhl and Anita Vivanco had the other win for the Warriors, prevailing 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

BOYS’ GOLF

• Devils nip Henryville at Champions Pointe: Jeffersonville got a 40 from Matt Thompson, the overall match medalist, and combined for a team score of 183 to upend Henryville and Rock Creek Christian at Champions Pointe Golf Club.

Four Red Devils turned in scores in the 40’s, including John Rodgers (46), Tony Holloway (48) and Nathan Morrow (49).

Nick Campbell carded a 43 to lead the Hornets, while Cameron Tucker had a 46. Freshman Kaleb Robertson turned in a 49 to break 50 for the first time in his career.

“Overall, we’re improving,” said Henryville coach Robin Embry. “The kids expect to play three or four shots better per person, and if we could do that we’d get down into the 170’s. That would be a great spot for this group to be in.”

Rock Creek finished with a 241, led by a 42 from Eric Waiz. Eric White had a 56 for the Lions.

Henryville will meet South Central at Chariot Run on Thursday.

TRACK AND FIELD

• Creek sweeps four-way: Silver Creek won both the girls’ and boys’ side of a four-way meet against Henryville, New Washington and Borden.

The Dragon girls scored 94 points to earn the top honors, edging the second-place Hornets’ 81-point-effort.

Heather Stacey and Donna Ferree both took two events for Silver Creek. Stacey was best in both hurdles, winning the 110-meters in 17.1 seconds and the 300 in 48.2.

Ferree claimed both throwing events. She won the shot put with a toss of 31-feet 1/2 inch and prevailed in discus with a heave of 103-11.

In all, Creek won each of the three relay events and also had first-place efforts from Olivia Horvath (3,200), Haley Turner (1,600) and Nicole Hess (pole vault).

Another Dragon highlight came from Molly Voyles, who set a new school record with a second-place effort in the long jump. Her jump of 16-4 eclipsed the previous mark — held by Katie Wells — by three inches.

“Heather Stacey had a great meet winning four races. We also got a school record from Molly Voyles in the long jump,” said Creek coach Al Eckert. “Henryville has a very fine team and we feel fortunate to come away with a win. Our distance runners and throwers also did a nice job.”

Maggie Gilstrap won four events for the Hornets, claiming the 100, 200, 400 and long jump. Katie Spellman was the other big winner for Henryville, winning the 800. Katelyn Walker won the high jump for New Wash with a jump of five feet.

In the boys’ meet, the Dragons scored 92 points to better Henryville’s 71 1/2, while Borden placed third and New Wash fourth.

Jack Eckert and Brendan Chwalek did most of the damage for Creek, combining for four individual first-place finishes. Chwalek claimed victories in the 1,600 and 800 and Eckert was first in the pole vault and 400.

“This was great win from the boys,” said Eckert. “We had outstanding performances from Brendan Chwalek with three firsts and one second and Jack Eckert with two firsts and two seconds. The bright spot was the return of Alex Jones. He ran second in the 800 in a very controlled 2:07. We get him back, that will be a big boost for our team.”

Henryville’s top efforts came in relays — where it won the 400 and 1,600 — and also from sprinter Mat Smith, who won the 100 and 200. Borden also had a two-event winner, as Kyle Boling took the high jump and long jump.

•New Albany races past Seymour: The Bulldogs won all three relays and got two wins from Hali Alexander in beating Seymour 76-50..

Alexander won both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles by wide margins, while teammate Carissa Martin won both the 800 and 1600-meter races.
