HS ROUNDUP: CAI beats Providence in eight

Haendiges strong on mound for Warriors

Christian Academy of Indiana scored three runs in the top of the seventh to force extra innings and then got a game-winning hit from first-time starter Paul Devore in a thrilling 7-6 victory over Providence on Monday.

Down 6-3 entering the final frame, the Warriors (8-5) got a two-RBI double from sophomore J.B. Butner and an RBI single from Trey Haendiges to climb back into contention.

“It was a really good baseball game,” said CAI coach Ryan Wheeler. “The players on both teams just gave it their all, and both teams made really big plays in really big situations.

Haendiges pitched all eight innings for the win, striking out seven while improving to 5-1 on the season. Scott Montgomery took the loss for the Pioneers (8-5).

“I thought Christian Academy played a tremendous game and their players executed really well,” said Providence coach Scott Hornung. “They had some big hits with runners in scoring position and showed a lot of determination.”

Johnelle Hardin and Kyle Erwin doubled in the loss for Providence, while Evan Evanczyk tripled.

Both teams will play today, with Providence hosting Silver Creek and CAI traveling to Borden.

Generals surge back on Braves: Clarksville allowed Brownstown to score four times in the top of the seventh inning only to come back and score five times in the bottom of the inning in a 10-9 win over the Braves at Wayne Stock Field.

Robert Noe hit a two-out, game-winning RBI single one batter after T.J. Wilbert tied the contest with a two-run single to cap the dramatic rally by the Generals.

“It’s a great way to come back and fight to the end,” said Clarksville head coach Brian James. “A lot of teams probably would have let up there, but they battled.”

Clarksville committed six errors in the win, but tallied eight hits — including a triple by Dalton Fitzgerald and a double by Drew Farney.

“I’m not happy that we put ourselves in the position to give up the four runs in the seventh,” said James. “But I am thrilled by the desire of the team to come back from that adversity.”

Clarksville travels to Jeff today.
