HIGH SCHOOL TRACK: Bluegrass blitzes Jeffersonville Invite

— JEFFERSONVILLE — While most talk about racing and Kentucky this week has centered on Kentucky Derby 134, two teams from the Bluegrass State ran circles around the field Thursday night at the Jeffersonville Invitational.
Meet champion Male and runner-up Trinity outdistanced themselves from their Hoosier rivals, dominating sprint events and the three relays to claim the top two spots in the standings.
The Bulldogs scored six first-place finishes on their way to 102 points overall, while the Shamrocks won two event crowns and tallied 81 points.
“I’ve coached at this meet for nine years and I don’t think I’ve ever seen teams as strong as those top two,” said an impressed New Albany coach Dennis Scott. “The speed that they brought to the table was impressive.”
The most impressive display was by Male, which claimed first in the 100-, 400-, 200-meter dashes, as well as the 400 and 1600 relays.
“It’s going to do us nothing but good to run against that type of speed,” said Scott. “But some of our young guys definitely were a bit surprised by their overall strength.”
For the host Red Devils, there was one victory — which came from senior Cornelius Broadway in the 300-hurdles in 41.09 seconds. Overall, Jeff placed third, scoring 56 total points.
“He’s a senior, but it’s his first year running,” said Jeff coach Ryan Bixler. “He just keeps getting better and better out there and that was on display today.”
Jeff had third-place finishes by Dan Coats (1,600) and Toba Omotinugbon (discus).
Two other local performers turned up with event victories. Eean Huffman of Providence was best in both the shot put and discus, while Brent Lewellen of Clarksville rolled to a victory in the 110 hurdles.
Floyd Central turned up fourth, with its highest finish coming from Cory Reece, who was runner-up in the discus. New Albany placed fifth, led by Adam Lutz’s second in the 800. Charlestown tallied 11 points and was led by a third-place effort by Justin Baxtron in the 200. Borden scored 11 points and featured a third-place showing by Kyle Bowling in the long jump.
