The Floyd Central girls’ tennis team only dropped four games to win its opener in the Hoosier Hills Conference Tournament over visiting Madison on Tuesday, 5-0.

No. 1 singles player Kelsey Wisman and the No. 1 doubles tandem of Emma LaDuke and Kayla Prusinski each prevailed 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Chelsea Burch won 6-0, 6-1, while teammate Jessica VanWinkle prevailed at three singles, 6-1, 6-0. The Highlanders’ No. 2 doubles team of Alyssa Botkins and Annie Hunt won 6-1, 6-1.

Floyd will travel to either Columbus East or Seymour for the HHC semifinals on Thursday.

• New Albany downs Devils in HHC: Host New Albany swept both doubles matches and prevailed at No. 1 singles to defeat Jeffersonville in the first round of the HHC tourney, 3-2.

Winning for the Red Devils were Katherine Clark at No. 2 singles (4-6, 6-0, 6-1) and Dee Roehm at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-0). Clark won 16 of the final 18 games after trailing 5-0 in the first set.

No individual results for the other three matches were available at press time. New Albany, which hosts Corydon today, will face either Jennings County or Bedford North Lawrence in the HHC semis on Thursday. Jeff plays Shawe Memorial today.

• Charlestown downs Austin: The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Erica Kasey and Paige Jones led host Charlestown to a 3-2 Mid-Southern Conference victory over Austin. Kasey and Jones had no problems defeating the Eagles’ Dee Logsdon and Brittany Nease, 6-2, 6-2.

“Our seniors, Erica and Paige, played a near-perfect match today at the one doubles spot,” Pirates coach Chris Ryan said. “The one doubles spot was the one I knew would determine the outcome of the conference matchup. Those two seniors jumped out early and never let up.”

Charlestown’s two doubles team of Whitney Greene and Gina Smith also prevailed 6-4, 6-3. Holly Duggins picked up the Pirates’ lone singles win at the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 6-0.

Charlestown hosts New Washington today.

• CAI sweeps Lanesville: Christian Academy of Indiana dropped only one game across the three singles matches, while both doubles teams also rolled to easy victories in a 5-0 win over Lanesville.

At No. 1 singles, Shawna Doty won 6-0, 6-0, as did teammate Natalie Winslow at No. 3. Ashley Roach took the two singles match, 6-1, 6-0.

Sally Sturgis and Jenny Ingle teamed for a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Nicole Melton and Caroline Turcotte at No. 1 doubles, the afternoon’s closest match. Kayla Koerber and Kassandra Botts also won at No. 2 doubles for CAI.

The Warriors will host Paoli on Thursday.

• Generals win sixth in a row: On Monday, Clarksville extended its winning streak to six matches with a 3-2 victory at Brownstown.

The Generals’ Deahna Welcher (No. 1), Tiffany Fitzpatrick (No. 2) and Jamie Wilkerson (No. 3) all prevailed in their respective singles matches.

Clarksville will host Salem next Monday.

SOFTBALL

• Clarksville’s Betz tosses no-no at Austin: Pitcher Kelly Betz threw a no-hitter on Tuesday to lead Clarksville to a 6-0 triumph at Austin. Betz struck out 10 and walked one to improve her record to 10-2.

“She handled them pretty easy. It was a pretty good effort by Kelly,” Generals head coach Tim Hauber said.

Betz and teammates Bronte Miley and Kelsey Becker each had two hits. Also for Clarksville (16-6, 5-3 Mid-Southern Conference), Erica Martin and Jessica Bisinger both had two RBIs.

The Generals will play Scottsburg in their home finale on Thursday.

• Pioneers win in eight: Providence scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat host Orleans, 6-4.

Natalie McDonough put the Pioneers (4-14) up 5-4 when she had an infield single to plate Sammi Combs. Then McDonough scored the insurance run from second base on a triple by Lauren Osborne.

Osborne was 2-for-2 in a reserve role, while McDonough went 2-for-4. Teammate Maria Cochran smacked a three-run double in a four-run third inning.

Providence pitcher Kelsey Markland recorded a complete game to get the win. She allowed 12 hits and one walk while striking out 10.

“Today was the first time this season we played together as a team. It was a great effort all the way around,” said Pioneers coach Sean Payne, whose team hosts South Central today.

• Hornets bury New Wash: Host Henryville scored nine runs in the final two innings to break open a close game and beat New Washington 11-1 in five innings.

Ashley Dickerson pitched four innings to get the win, and teammate Amanda Embry worked one inning in a relief appearance, as the pair held the Mustangs to four hits on the day.

“Ashley and Amanda did a great job on the mound today,” said Henryville coach Jenny Odle. “Our offense was much better than in recent games. Hopefully, that’s the sign of a turnaround for us.”

Kelcey Pierce and Embry doubled in the win for Henryville (17-3). New Wash’s Casey Johnson had the Mustangs’ only double.

Henryville will travel to Corydon on Friday. New Washington visits Shawe Memorial today.

• Warriors fall to South Central: On Monday, Christian Academy finally put some runs on the scoreboard, but still it was not enough in a 14-4 loss to South Central. The Warriors’ Rebekah Stewart, Nadia Quiggle, Sarah Boesing and Cailen Want each scored.

“The team scored their first runs of the season. I would have liked to have scored our runs off of hits, but you take what you can get right now,” CAI coach Emy Lorigan said. “The girls continue to learn more about their positions. Emily Butts came in tonight and did an excellent job pitching.”

CAI will visit Providence on Thursday.

BASEBALL

• Pirates blow out West Washington: Matt Wyatt went 3-for-4 with two home runs and eight RBIs to lead visiting Charlestown past West Washington on Tuesday, 20-3.

Both of Wyatt’s blasts happened in the top of the first, which accounted for five RBIs. He hit a two-run shot with none out, and then had a two-out, three-run homer.

Teammate Joel Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and also was the winning pitcher. He threw 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits and striking out three.

“Obviously, it was nice to get a victory. We started out strong,” Pirates head coach Ricky Romans said. “All in all, everybody contributed.”

Charlestown (8-6) will travel to Brownstown on Thursday.

• Highlanders blank Silver Creek: Starting pitcher Jeffrey Thompson threw a three-hit shutout to lead Floyd Central to a 7-0 victory over Silver Creek at Highlander Field. Thompson upped his record to 5-2.

The Highlanders (13-8) scored five runs in the top of the third and went up 6-0 with a run in the fourth. Floyd’s Ben Stillman and L.J. Martin each had doubles. The Dragons’ Brendan Chwalek was the losing pitcher.

Floyd will host Jeff in the HHC Tournament semifinals at 6 tonight. Silver Creek (6-11) will entertain Scottsburg on Thursday.

TRACK AND FIELD

• Henryville teams take first at South Central: The Henryville girls’ and boys’ squads each placed first in a triangular meet at South Central. The Hornet girls scored 83 points, while the boys tallied 92.

In the girls’ meet, Henryville senior Maggie Gilstrap won two events, which were the 400-meter dash and the long jump. Other Hornet individuals who collected blue ribbons were Leslie Brishaber (discus), Katie Spellman (1,600) and Shelby Hodge (3,200). The Henryville 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams also prevailed.

The Hornet boys won 11 events, including three victories by Mat Smith. The senior won the high jump, the 100 dash and the 200. Teammates Brandon McGloshen and Kyle Hopkins each collected two wins. McGloshen won the high jump and 1,600, while Hopkins took first in the shot put and discus.
