Starting pitcher Kelsey Markland tossed a no-hitter, leading the Providence softball team to a 5-0 triumph over South Central on Wednesday at home.
Markland, a senior, struck out 10 and walked none in picking up her fifth victory of the year. She also helped herself at the plate, going 2-for-3. Teammate Katie Flanagan collected a double.
The Pioneers (5-14) scored two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth.
“Along with Kelsey’s pitching, we had a great defensive effort. We had girls make hustle plays, which was great to see,” Providence coach Sean Payne said.
The Pioneers host Christian Academy of Indiana today.
BASEBALL
• Generals remain hot: Clarksville won its fourth consecutive game, defeating Crawford County at Wayne Stock Field 2-1.
Generals’ starting pitcher T.J. Wilbert picked up a complete-game victory. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 10.
Clarksville (7-11) did all of its scoring in the bottom of the first, as Derick McNew collected a two-run single. Keegan Price had a double for the Generals’ other hit.
“It was a good win against a pretty good team,” Clarksville head coach Brian James said. “T.J. pitched well enough to keep us in it.”
The Generals travel to Pekin Eastern today.
BOYS’ GOLF
• Pioneers top Clarksville: Nick Koetter shot a 2-over-par 37 to lead Providence past Clarksville at Wooded View Golf Course. Ryan Frey also broke 40 with a score of 39, while Mike Leist and Patrick Geary each shot 42s.
For Clarksville, Ryan Gettlefinger led the way with a score of 44. Alex Knerr (46), Dylan Stephens (53) and Alex Johnson (57) rounded out the Generals’ scoring.
“We’re improving,” said Clarksville coach Chris Keeler. “By 10 shots, this is our best score of the year.”
Providence will play in the Southern Indiana Open at Hidden Creek Golf Club on Saturday. The Generals will host Austin and North Harrison at Wooded View next Wednesday.
• Hornets down South Central: Henryville scored a 180 to beat an incomplete South Central squad at Chariot Run.
Nick Campbell was the top scorer for the Hornets, finishing with a 43. Taylor Weeks and John Clark both shot 45 and Cameron Tucker had a 47.
Chance Howard of South Central was the match medalist with a 42.
Henryville plays Christian Academy of Indiana and Rock Creek Christian at Hidden Creek today.
TRACK AND FIELD
• Creek second, C-town eighth in MSC girls’ meet: The Silver Creek girls’ team placed second in Tuesday’s Mid-Southern Conference meet at North Harrison. The Dragons scored 125 points, 54 behind first-place Brownstown.
The Dragons had four individual champions: Nicole Hess (pole vault), Heather Stacey (300 hurdles), Haley Turner (3,200) and Lindsey Maymon (400).
“We had a very successful conference showing. All the girls came through with very good performances,” said Dragons coach Al Eckert. “Nicole Hess broke the school record in the pole vault with a vault of 10 feet. She has been working very hard and we knew it was just a matter of time.
“Haley Turner, who is just a freshmen, won the 3,200 in a very good time of 12:29.5. It was only the second time she has run the event. She is just learning the sport and ran a very smart race to overcome about a 10-second deficit at the mile mark to win going away. Lindsay Maymon also won the 400 with a gutsy performance. Heather Stacey won the 300 lows with a season-best time and this was the third year in a row (she was) the conference champion in this event. Our relays did a nice job and we got a lot of points in our field events. We have a small team, but they are very productive. The coaching staff is very proud of how the kids competed.”
Charlestown finished eighth with 20 points. Elizabeth Stevens led the Pirates by placing third in the 400-meter run, fifth in the long jump and seventh in the 200. Teammate Katie McClaine was seventh in the 100 hurdles.
“It was a good team effort with only 10 girls competing,” Pirates coach Kim Carroll said.
Silver Creek and Charlestown will compete in the Jeffersonville Sectional next Tuesday.
