The Floyd Central boys’ golf team edged three of its biggest local rivals on Monday at the New Albany Country Club to claim victory at the annual Big Four Classic.

The Highlanders recorded a team score of 158, seven shots ahead of second-place Providence in the standings. New Albany placed third and Jeff was fourth overall.

Pioneer junior Trey Pfund shot an even-par round of 36 to edge second-place David Frank of Floyd Central by one stroke.

Ben Clark and Matt Rainer each carded 40s in the triumph for Floyd Central, and Chase Cadle shot a round of 41 to round out the Highlanders’ scoring.

Providence’s scoring was rounded out by Robert Spiller (41), Ben Rose (42) and Andrew Lobeck (46).

For New Albany, Ricky Miller and Brian Keeler each recorded rounds of 43 in the third-place effort. Matthew Thompson led a short-handed Jeffersonville team with a score of 40.

Floyd will visit Evansville North on Friday. Providence will travel to Seymour next Tuesday. New Albany will play in the Hoosier Hills Conference meet at Valley View Golf Club on Saturday. Jeff will host Columbus East on Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

• Highlanders take third in HHC: Floyd Central captured third place in the HHC Tournament, defeating New Albany in the consolation game at Prosser Field.

The Highlanders (14-5) scored their only run in the first inning. Brittany Mills led off the frame with a bunt single and then stole second base. With two out, Libby Wright collected an RBI single to knock in Mills.

Floyd starting pitcher Rena Philpot went the distance, throwing a one-hitter. She struck out 11 and walked three. Teammate Brittany Bellus had two hits, including a double.

“One run is usually not enough, but it was tonight,” Floyd head coach Joe Witten said. “Our defense was superb. I was proud to see us put the ball in play and have a chance to score.”

New Albany pitcher Faith Griffaw earned the loss. She threw a complete game, allowing four hits and one walk. Griffaw struck out four.

The Highlanders host Sacred Heart today. The Bulldogs (10-10) will entertain Madison on Wednesday.

• Floyd split squad downs Creek: Floyd sent a split squad up to Silver Creek and defeated the host Dragons, 8-2.

Sarah Schraffenberger led the Highlanders with two hits, which were a double and a triple.

Floyd’s Jordan Batliner was the winning pitcher. She went the distance, yielding two hits and two walks while striking out five.

Silver Creek pitcher Jessica Wells picked up the loss, and teammate Samantha Block had a double.

The Dragons will visit South Central on Wednesday.

• Jeff holds off C-town rally: The Red Devils led 9-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, but two errors helped host Charlestown score five runs. Still, Jeff held on for a 9-8 victory.

Bailey Waterhouse and Kim Hensley each had doubles, part of an 11-hit attack for Jeff. The Devils plated three in the opening inning and then broke loose for five runs in the fifth.

For Charlestown, who fell to 8-9, Kelsey Houchen and Ashton Napier each had a pair of hits and Markie Floyd smacked a two-run double in the loss.

“I felt like we hit the ball pretty good, but too many errors let them score too many runs early on,” said Charlestown coach Kevin Zollman. “We continued fighting back though, and made it a game at the end.”

Both teams’ next games are against Henryville. The Devils will travel to Henryville tonight, while the Pirates will host the Hornets on Wednesday.

• Pioneers commit six errors in loss: Providence committed six errors to fall at Louisville Holy Cross, 10-4.

Pioneer senior Kelsey Markland suffered the loss on the mound. She gave up seven hits and a walk in a complete-game effort, while striking out three.

Providence’s Maria Cochran and Sammy Combs both went 2-for-4.

“We had an awful infield-outfield warm-up and it carried over,” Pioneers head coach Sean Payne said. “Defense had been great all year until tonight.”

Providence (5-16) hosts Southwestern today.

BASEBALL

• Metzger lifts Charlestown: Cameron Metzger held visiting Salem to three hits and delivered a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to lift Charlestown to a 1-0 victory over the Lions.

Metzger’s two-out base hit in the final inning scored Chad Brady for the game’s lone run. The victory came against Salem starter Alex Potter, who no-hit the Pirates in a regular-season matchup a year ago.

“It was a ballgame that came down to two great pitching performances,” said Pirate coach Ricky Romans. “I can’t talk enough about the Potter kid. He tossed a great ballgame.

“Cam came through in the clutch when we needed the big hit and on the mound he battled all day and made Salem put the ball in play.”

Charlestown (11-6, 4-3 Mid-Southern Conference) will host New Albany on Wednesday.

• Floyd Central wins on road: Two days after a tough loss in the HHC Tournament championship game, Floyd Central bounced back to beat host Louisville Southern, 6-4.

The Highlanders rolled out of the gate, scoring four times in the top of the first inning. Then Floyd had to hang on in the seventh, as Southern scored three times in the bottom of the inning before the Highlanders closed things out.

“It’s good getting the week started off with a solid win,” said Highlander coach Casey LaDuke. “Coming off last week where we played some big games in our conference tourney and coming off the loss on Saturday, I was interested to see how the team would respond.”

Dylan Bleemel got the win for Floyd (15-9), which had five hits in the victory. The Highlanders host North Harrison today.

• Austin, Hale blank Generals: Clarksville had no answer for Austin pitcher Dylan Hale at Wayne Stock Field.

Hale, an Indiana State recruit, threw a one-hitter to lead the Class 2A No. 2 Eagles to a 7-0 victory over the Generals. The lone hit he gave up was a single by Keegan Price in the third inning.

Clarksville starter Jon Bramer pitched six innings, yielding six runs (all earned) on five hits. He fanned four and walked four.

“The bottom line is we played a team that’s much better than us,” Generals coach Brian James said. “I didn’t think we played that badly. I think we proved to ourselves — and Austin — that we can compete with them. Hale is the best pitcher that I’ve seen in several years. But we were the most disciplined (at the plate) than I’ve seen us this season.”

Clarksville (8-13, 3-4 MSC) hosts Christian Academy of Indiana today.
