HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Floyd Central earns win in first round of sectional

— Another sectional, another victory for the Floyd Central girls’ tennis team.
The Highlanders, winners of seven consecutive titles at the tournament they host, began their defense once again by not dropping a set in a 5-0 victory over North Harrison in the first round of the Floyd Central Sectional on Wednesday.
The closest match came at No. 1 singles, where Emma LaDuke and Kayla Prusinski posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over Macela Napper and Kelsey Jacobi. No other North Harrison team or individual won more than two games in a set.
In singles action, Kelsey Wisman beat Wynn Schroyer 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, while Chelsea Burch took a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 2 spot. Jessica VanWinkle won over Caitlyn Janes at three singles, 6-2, 6-2.
In the other match, Alyssa Botkins and Ann Hunt beat Becca Dean and Katie Reed 6-2, 6-1.
“North Harrison has only one senior and we have four, so we have a lot of experience and a lot of people who have put the time in,” said Floyd Central coach Rick Miller. “We expected to play well and we did play pretty well. We’re at the point where if you make a mistake or have a bad day, you’re done for the year.”
Floyd Central will meet Crawford County in the seminfinals today.

SOFTBALL
• Hornets shut out Charlestown: Henryville pitcher Amanda Embry lost a no-hitter in the bottom of the seventh, but still struck out nine in a 6-0 shut out win over the host Pirates.
The Hornets (21-4) jumped out early by plating three runs in the top of the first and led 4-0 after three complete, taking advantage of doubles by Ashley Dickerson, Kelcey Pierce, Haley Hall and Rebecca Carter.
Ashton Napier led off the final inning with a grounder up the middle to spoil Embry’s bid.
“I was pleased with how we came out and got hits early,” said Henryville coach Jenny Odle. “The entire lineup hit the ball and hit it well.”
The Hornets host Austin today.
