Two powers from Bloomington flooded the top of the standings at Tuesday’s Bedford North Lawrence girls’ track regional.
Bloomington South narrowly edged its rivals from Bloomington North in the team standings, winning the title by a mere point, 96-95.
New Albany and Jeffersonville staged a similar battle for the No. 3 spot in the standings, with the Bulldogs emerging on top of that duel.
New Albany’s Hali Alexander earned a victory in the 100-meter hurdles, and the Bulldogs placed two more individuals and a relay team into next week’s state meet in Indianapolis with top three finishes.
Alexander had a runner-up finish in the 300 hurdles to pair with her victory. Teammate Kaleb Barbour was second overall in the 100, and New Albany’s Carissa Martin had a third-place effort in both the 800 and 1,600. The final state qualifiers for New Albany was the 1,600 and 3,200 relay teams — squads that each finished third overall.
Jeff’s fourth-place finish was fueled in large part by sprinter Shanice Gohlson. The sophomore was first to the line in the 100 and was also part of the 400 relay squad that earned first overall as well.
Jeff also had one field event champion, as senior Andrea Newcom broke her own school record in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet, 6 inches to win the event.
The only other local champion on the day was Henryville’s Maggie Gilstrap. After earning all-state honors in the long jump a year ago, the Hornet senior will return to the state finals after topping the field with a leap of 17-7.
Silver Creek advanced three to state with its top finisher Nicole Hess earning second in the pole vault. Joining Hess as state qualifiers are Heather Stacey (third in 300 hurdles) and Donna Ferree (third in discus).
Floyd Central’s Becky Kennedy earned a runner-up finish in the 400 to go with a third in the 199.
Both Borden and New Washington had one finisher in the top eight in an event. The Braves’ Melissa Hunt scored in the shot put, while Mustang freshman Katelyn Walker was eighth in the high jump.
