By KEVIN HARRIS

Recent Charlestown High School graduates Damon Vest and Cameron Metzger have both been selected to the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 3A All-State first team for the 2009 season.

Vest made the team as a catcher, while Metzger earned a spot as an outfielder. They are the second and third players in Charlestown baseball history to make the all-state squad.

Metzger and Vest led the Pirates to their first sectional championship in 10 years last month.

Several area players were honorable-mention picks. They are the following: Class 4A — Cody Poole, Jeffersonville; Phil Forbis, New Albany; Class 2A — Anthony Denis, Providence; Class A — Trey Haendiges, Christian Academy of Indiana; Kenny Harrell, Henryville.

FOUR LOCAL PLAYERS MAKE ALL-STATE SOFTBALL SQUADS

Recent New Albany graduate Chelsea Jordan earned a spot on the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Softball All-State first team.

It was the second consecutive season Jordan has made the squad, as she was a third-team selection in 2008. Jordan will play at the University of Louisville next season.

Three other area players were named to the all-state second team. They were Floyd Central’s Jordan Batliner, Henryville’s Amanda Embry and Charlestown’s Amanda Miller. Batliner helped the Highlanders reach the Class 4A state finals, while Embry led the Hornets to their third straight Class A sectional title.

ODLE NAMED DISTRICT 5 COACH OF THE YEAR

Third-year Henryville coach Jenny Odle has been named the ICGSA Softball District 5 Coach of the Year.

Along with guiding the Hornets to their third consecutive sectional crown, Odle also led them to their third Southern Athletic Conference title in a row in 2009. Henryville posted a 24-5 record this past season, which is the third straight year under Odle the team has won at least 20 games.

In addition, Odle was a coach for the South team in the ICGSA All-Star games last weekend.

NEW ALBANY GOLF SCRAMBLE

The New Albany boys’ and girls’ golf teams will be hosting a fundraising scramble on Sunday, July 26 at Valley View Golf Club (2 p.m. shotgun start).

All proceeds will benefit the golf teams. The cost is $80 per player. This includes golf, food, prizes and goody bag.

To sign up, contact Rick Belcher at New Albany High School at 812-949-4272 ext. 2573.
