Weekly look at performance of local college athletes

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

• Eric Schulz (Indiana State men’s cross country, New Albany graduate, Sr.) — top performance: fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference Championships last Saturday in Peoria, Ill., 26:11; notes: Schulz earned a spot on the all-conference squad in leading the Sycamores to the Missouri Valley title by one point over second-place Southern Illinois. Schulz was ISU’s top runner in the meet.



CHARLESTOWN

• Jonathan Akemon (Anderson football, Jr.) — notes: Akemon saw action in the Ravens’ 28-3 victory last Saturday at Bluffton. It was the first win of the season for AU.



CHRISTIAN ACADEMY OF INDIANA

• Kayla Koerber (Lindsey Wilson volleyball, So.) — notes: eight kills in the Blue Raiders’ 3-1 road win last Thursday at the Cumberlands.



CLARKSVILLE

• Keshia Johnson-Isgrigg (IU Southeast volleyball, Fr.) — notes: Johnson-Isgrigg played one set in the Grenadiers’ four-set home victory over Oakland City last Thursday.

• Whitney Piatt (Manchester volleyball, So.) — weekly stats: 33 digs, four kills, three assists, three aces; top performance: 17 digs in the Spartans’ five-set loss to Olivet last Friday at the Calvin tri-match; season-ending stats: 176 digs, 71 kills, 15 aces.



FLOYD CENTRAL

• Abby Baumgartle (DePauw women’s swimming, Fr.) — notes: sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (4:17.91) and seventh in the 1,000 freestyle (12:17.49) in a 155-129 loss last Saturday at Washington-St. Louis.

• Morgan Baumgartle (Ball State women’s swimming, Fr.) — top performance: fifth in the 500 freestyle in the Cardinals’ 155-143 home dual-meet setback to Toledo last Friday, 5:27.26; notes: sixth in the 1,000 freestyle against Toledo (11:17.48) and the 500 freestyle in last Saturday’s dual-meet victory over Bowling Green (5:28.35).

• Christine Cleveland (Purdue women’s rowing, Jr.) — top performance: Cleveland helped the Boilermakers win the women’s open eight-plus B final in last Saturday’s Head of the Eagle meet in Indianapolis, 17:21.41.

• Abby Enteman (IU Southeast women’s tennis, Jr.) — weekly stats: 1-0 singles record, 1-1 doubles record; top performance: No. 5 singles win (6-0, 6-2) and No. 2 doubles victory with partner Lauren Becher (8-1) in the Grenadiers’ 9-0 semifinal win over Asbury in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament last Friday in Richmond, Ky.

• Trevor Griffin (Millikin men’s soccer, Sr.) — notes: one shot in the Big Blue’s 1-1 tie with visiting Augie last Sunday.

• Ashlie Haworth (Lindsey Wilson volleyball, Fr.) — top performance: team-highs in kills (15) and aces (two) along with 15 digs in Lindsey’s 3-1 victory last Thursday at the Cumberlands.

• April Hill (Asbury women’s swimming, Fr.) — top performance: fifth in both the 400 medley (4:34.12) and 400 freestyle relays (4:11.32) in a 145 1/2-68 1/2 dual-meet loss last Friday at Centre; notes: sixth in the 200 individual medley against Centre, 2:34.8.

• Sarah Kline (Lindsey Wilson volleyball, Sr.) — top performance: match-high 43 assists, 10 digs and two kills in the Blue Raiders’ 3-1 road victory last Thursday at the Cumberlands.

• Emma LaDuke (IU Southeast women’s tennis, So.) — weekly stats: 2-0 singles record, 2-0 doubles record; top performance: No. 6 singles victory (6-0, 6-0) and No. 3 doubles win with partner Kelsey Wisman (8-1) in the Grenadiers’ 5-3 victory over Brescia in the championship match of the KIAC Tournament last weekend.

• Lauren McCartin (IU Southeast volleyball, So.) — weekly stats: 34 digs, four assists; top performance: match-high 23 digs and four assists in the Grenadiers’ four-set home win over Oakland City last Thursday.

• Caitlin Morency (Anderson volleyball, Sr.) — weekly stats: 133 digs, six aces; top performance: team-high 38 digs in the Ravens’ five-set loss to Wartburg last Friday at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational.

• Janelle Nassim (Florida Atlantic women’s swimming, Jr.) — top performance: fifth in the 200 freestyle relay in a double-dual meet between host Florida Gulf Coast and Tampa last Friday, 1:43.72; notes: seventh in both the 50 freestyle (25.39) and the 200 breaststroke (2:29.97) and eighth in the 200 medley relay (1:54.72).

• Lindsey Ragland (Louisville volleyball, Fr.) — weekly stats: two digs.

• Cole Richards (Georgetown football, Fr.) — notes: one extra-point kick in the Tigers’ 45-0 victory last Thursday at home against Pikeville.

• Katy Schad (Marshall volleyball, Fr.) — weekly stats: 27 digs, 10 kills, three assists; top performance: 16 digs, 10 kills and three assists in the Thundering Herd’s 3-1 loss last Friday at Houston.

• Kelsey Traughber (Spalding women’s soccer, Fr.) — season-ending stats: 18 shots, 10 shots on goal, team-high six points, team-high three goals.

• Chet Werncke (IU Southeast men’s basketball, Fr.) — notes: Werncke played a minute in the Grenadiers’ 83-64 loss on Monday at the Cumberlands.

• Brittany Wilson (Montevallo volleyball, Fr.) — weekly stats: 64 digs, nine aces, four assists; top performance: match-highs in digs (32) and aces (six) along with three assists in a 3-1 win last Saturday at North Carolina-Pembroke.

• Kelsey Wisman (IU Southeast women’s tennis, So.) — weekly stats: 2-0 singles record, 2-0 doubles record; top performance: No. 4 singles win (7-5, 6-3) and No. 3 doubles victory with LaDuke in the Grenadiers’ triumph over Brescia in the championship match of the KIAC Tournament last Saturday.



HENRYVILLE

• Katie Spellman (Franklin women’s cross country, Fr.) — top performance: 25th in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships last Saturday in Cincinnati, 26:11; notes: Spellman and the Grizzlies finished second as a team in the meet.



JEFFERSONVILLE

• Dylan Abrahamson (Hanover men’s soccer, Fr.) — notes: two shots, including one on goal, in the Panthers’ 2-1 home victory against Manchester last Saturday.

• Trea Burgess (Indiana football, So.) — notes: three tackles (all solo) in the Hoosiers’ 42-24 setback last Saturday at Iowa. In addition, Burgess has earned a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V team along with teammates Ben Chappell and Brandon Bugg. He currently has a 3.47 grade-point average.

• John Clark (Rend Lake CC wrestling, Fr.) — notes: 2-2 record at the Lindenwood Open last Friday, winning one match by an 8-2 decision and claiming another victory with a pin at the 5:08 mark.

• Emily Collins (Ball State women’s swimming, So.) — top performance: fourth in both the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.48) and 400 medley relay (4:09.34) in a 153-141 home dual-meet victory last Saturday against Bowling Green; notes: fifth in the 400 free relay in last Friday’s home dual-meet loss to Toledo, 3:50.39.

• Marc Fridley (Mt. St. Joseph wrestling, So.) — notes: 0-2 record at season-opening Buffalo Open last Sunday.

• Jamie Goldsmith (Iowa Western CC football, Fr.) — notes: three carries for 4 yards in the Reivers’ 20-17 victory last Saturday at Ellsworth.

• Chelsea Grover (Western Kentucky women’s soccer, Jr.) — notes: Grover played 30 minutes in the Hilltoppers’ regular-season finale against Middle Tennessee State last Friday at home, with Western winning 2-0. Then on Wednesday in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinals in Boca Raton, Fla., Grover logged 87 minutes as the Hilltoppers lost in a shootout with Arkansas State.

• Jeremy Kendle (Bellarmine men’s basketball, Jr.) — notes: three points in the Knights’ 88-65 exhibition loss to Louisville on Wednesday at Freedom Hall.

• Josh Lowery (IU Southeast men’s basketball, Sr.) — notes: Lowery played two minutes in the Grenadiers’ loss on Monday in their season opener at the Cumberlands.



NEW ALBANY

• Felicia Adams (Hanover women’s soccer, Sr.) — weekly stats: eight shots, three shots on goal; notes: six shots, including two on goal, in the Panthers’ 1-0 home victory against Manchester last Saturday.

• Craig Bryant (IU Southeast men’s basketball, Sr.) — top performance: eight points on 3-of-4 shooting in the Grenadiers’ 83-64 loss on Monday at the Cumberlands in their season opener.

• Cordario Collier (Thomas More football, Sr.) — top performance: 24 carries for 80 yards, including a 1-yard, eventual game-winning touchdown run in the third quarter, and two catches for 25 yards in the Saints’ 14-7 road win last Saturday at Washington & Jefferson.

• Chris Farley (Thomas More football, Sr.) — top performance: five receptions for 57 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, in the Saints’ win last Saturday; notes: Thomas More clinched its second straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship with last Saturday’s victory. With the win, the Saints (8-0, 6-0 PAC) earned a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.

• Braydon Hobbs (Bellarmine men’s basketball, So.) — notes: seven points, four rebounds and three assists in the Knights’ exhibition loss against Louisville on Wednesday at Freedom Hall.

• Emily Knight (IU Southeast volleyball, Fr.) — weekly stats: 22 digs, two assists; top performance: team-high 11 digs in the Grenadiers’ 3-0 loss on Tuesday at Campbellsville.

• Mitchell Meyer (Hanover men’s basketball, Jr.) — top performance: 20 points and 11 rebounds in the Panthers’ 77-50 loss last Saturday at Evansville in an exhibition contest.

• Lauren Nash (Manchester volleyball, Jr.) — weekly stats: 132 assists, 51 digs, eight kills; top performance: team-high 43 assists, 16 digs and three kills in the Spartans’ 3-2 loss to Olivet at the Calvin tri-match last Friday; season-ending stats: team-high 772 assists, 324 digs, 61 kills, 25 aces.

• Hannah Sullivan (Ball State volleyball, Jr.) — weekly stats: 10 digs, eight kills, two blocks (both assist); top performance: nine digs, six kills and two blocks (both assist) in the Cardinals’ 3-0 win last Saturday at Northern Illinois.



NEW WASHINGTON

• Kelsie McKee (Kentucky Christian volleyball, So.) — top performance: six kills in the Knights’ 3-0 home victory over Crown last Saturday in the National Christian College Athletic Association Division II Mideast Region Tournament; notes: four aces in KCU’s 3-0 victory over Ohio Christian last Friday to kick off the tournament. McKee and the Knights won the Mideast Region title for the fourth straight year with a 3-0 victory over Johnson Bible College in the tournament final. They will play in the NCCAA Division II National Tournament Nov. 12-14 in Kissimmee, Fla.



PROVIDENCE

• Justin Benedetti (Bellarmine men’s basketball, Jr.) — top performance: game-high 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range, in the Knights’ exhibition loss on Wednesday at Freedom Hall.

• Oliver Book (Cincinnati men’s cross country, Fr.) — notes: 70th in the Big East Championships last Saturday in Kenosha, Wis., 27:33.

• Ethan Cook (Franklin football, Fr.) — notes: five carries on 20 yards and two kickoff returns for 31 yards in the Grizzlies’ 34-21 setback last Saturday at Rose-Hulman.

• Lindsey Hickerson (Transylvania volleyball, Sr.) — weekly stats: 22 digs, 12 kills, six blocks (four solo, two assist); top performance: 12 digs, five kills and three blocks in the Pioneers’ four-set loss last Tuesday at home against Mt. St. Joseph; season-ending stats: 325 digs, 229 kills, 26 blocks.

• Laura Jenkins (Manchester women’s soccer, Fr.) — notes: Jenkins played in the Spartans’ 1-0 loss last Saturday at Hanover; season-ending stats: team-high 28 shots, 16 shots on goal, team-high six goals.

• Lucy Knott (Bellarmine volleyball, Fr.) — notes: Knott had a kill, an ace and a block in the Knights’ 3-0 home win against Quincy last Saturday.
