HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Jeff girls on three-game win streak

By MATT CRESS

The Jeffersonville girls’ basketball team can be thankful for this — a three-game winning streak.

The young Red Devils, without a single senior in the lineup, picked up their first road win of the year and moved to 3-1 on the season by beating South Central 50-35 on Wednesday.

Freshman Lakin Roland again led Jeff with 13 points, while teammate Brooke Valentine scored six points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Another freshman starter, Jalynn McClain, had 10 points for the Red Devils.

Jeff led at each stop, pulling ahead 26-15 at the half in dropping the Rebels to 0-2 for the first time this decade.

The Red Devils will go for their second Hoosier Hills Conference win of the season at Jennings County on Friday.

• Mustang girls follow boys, beat Charlestown: The New Washington boys beat Charlestown for the first time since 2002 on Tuesday night, and the girls made it a perfect week against the Pirates with a 60-43 home win on Wednesday.

Four Mustangs finished in double figures, led by 14 points from Emma Burgin. Whitney Cranmer, Callie Burgin and Casey Johnson each scored 11 in the win for New Wash (3-1).

Cara Rhoten added nine points for Charlestown (2-1), as leading scorer Amanda Miller was held to just six.

New Wash pulled away for good in the second quarter, turning a 10-8 lead into a 31-19 edge at halftime.

“We wanted to come out and play hard and dictate the tempo,” said Mustang assistant coach Kirsti Holloway. “After the first quarter, we did that a little more. We had a nice run in the second quarter where we did some good things.”

Both teams will return to action on Saturday. Charlestown will host Silver Creek, while New Wash will entertain Scottsburg.
