— The epitome of teamwork

I am proud of the teamwork displayed on Thursday by the New Albany-Floyd County School Corp.
The decision was made to have early release from the schools in order to get the students home before the weather turned bad. The administration team, transportation, facilities, and food service departments, the principals, teachers, secretaries and nearly 12,000 students made adjustments and had a smooth early release.
Bus drivers maneuvered safely on the slick roads and made sure children were not dropped off at an empty house. Some secretaries stayed their regular working hours to answer phones after they were given permission to leave early. The food service teams made sure the students were fed and the prepared food was not wasted. The facilities crew prepared the buildings to embrace the inclement weather. The teachers made the necessary adjustments to their classroom schedules and made sure the students were informed on dismissal procedures. Principals remained in their buildings until all children had been picked up. Staff helped with supervision and getting kids on the buses. The students maintained good attitudes throughout all the transition.
I especially say thanks to Superintendent Dr. Dennis Brooks. He (as well as Danny Libs and Bill Briscoe) is out on the roads as early as 3:30 a.m. to inspect the road conditions. He has our children’s best interest in mind.
I also say “thanks” to INDOT workers who work around the clock to clear our roadways.

Reader: Leave cheerleaders alone

I am writing in response to the letter to the editor by Donna Wall about the New Albany High School cheerleaders.
I attended NAHS and graduated in 1997. During my time there I did the play-by-play for the football and basketball games on WNAS. So, as you can see, sports was my life most of the school year.
Let me take this chance to thank all our student athletes for what they do, and how much work it takes!
I have a real problem when adults have negative attitudes towards student athletes. To say that the cheerleaders don't have much spirit is very negative. How do you think the girls or their parents will feel after they read that. If you feel that way that is fine, you are entitled to your opinion. However, I do not feel that it is right to come down on the students that way. No student athlete deserves that from an adult.
The old saying still rings true today, “If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.”
