Reader: Why steal grave’s flowers?

I know who you are, the person who stole the flowers off of my husband’s memorial stone on Memorial Day, May 26. I rode around Walnut Ridge Cemetery until I found them.

It was an unusual arrangement. I picked them out because I thought he might like them for a change. Apparently, you did too.

Why did you steal them? Could you not afford any for your loved one’s grave? Do you think your family member appreciates receiving stolen flowers?

I think that is about as low as someone can sink — to steal from someone who can no longer defend himself.

I lost my husband in June of 2003 and you are but another in a long line of people who have betrayed him and stolen from him. This time, as in the past, as others have done, you hurt my heart and made me cry. I rushed to the nursery and banged on the door to buy one of the remaining arrangements, so his grave would not be bare.

Was that what it was — you could not stand for your father/mother/husband’s grave to be bare?

You could have picked some fresh flowers or even found some tossed away. You did not have to steal my show of love toward my husband.

I did not take back the flowers once I found them. I figured that if you had to sink so low, you must have really needed them. Perhaps this is the norm in your life — to steal — that seems to be the way of the world nowadays.

I feel very sorry for you. I just want you to know that once again I cried and I do not have many tears left. Friday was our anniversary. It would have been 37 years together had he lived — and you stole his flowers. Shame on you.

Reader: Golden Rule would serve us well

I read the column written by Lindon Dodd and published on Sunday, May 25.

I question the purpose of the column. In my opinion, it was neither educational nor entertaining. It was sarcastic and demeaning.

I was taught at an early age, those who belittle others do so to boost their own egos.

It would be a much better world if each of us would try to live by the Golden Rule.

Kudos to 2008 NA graduates

Congratulations to the New Albany High School class of 2008. It is obvious to everyone that your class set new standards in academics, the arts, athletics and community service. Your dedication and strong work ethic will be hard for future classes to match. You will be missed. Congratulations and good luck!

Reader: Proud to live in Edwardsville

This is in response to Dr. Aaron Striegel’s letter, published in The Tribune on Wednesday, May 28. I realize that it was intended for the Commissioners, but I feel it necessary to comment.

I have lived in the hamlet, as you call it, of Edwardsville for almost 50 years. Edwardsville may not be recognized as a town in Indiana — we may not have a post office or zip code, no school, police or fire department, but let me assure you, we had no say regarding the zip code. After building our house 45 years ago, we had a New Albany 47150 address. We received a letter from the post office saying our address was being changed to Georgetown’s 47122 zip code. This was done without any input from the residents of Edwardsville.

I object to the quotation marks placed around Edwardsville, while referring to the citizens of Edwardsville. Even though you might be grammatically correct, I will take the liberty of speaking for the majority of residents of Edwardsville in stating that we have been self-supporting in taking care of our garbage, and sewer systems. We have wonderful service from the Floyd County Police Department and the Floyd County Road Department is one of the best. Also, Highland Hills Middle School and Floyd Central High School are located on Edwardsville-Galena Road. Maybe they should qualify as Edwardsville schools, but I prefer to call them Floyd County schools. So schools are not an issue.

As for your statement that sewer rates for all citizens of Georgetown "will quadruple in February 2009," and including "the rates for the group that refers to themselves as ‘Edwardsville,’" I take issue with that as well. Not all citizens of Edwardsville are affected by what goes on in Georgetown. When Georgetown started their quest for sewers, they were advised by many that their plant would not handle growth and there were better places to locate it. The majority of the people that lived in the hamlet, as you call it, of Edwardsville were not allowed to have any input at all. The only people in Edwardsville that benefited from Georgetown sewers at that time were landowners that got sewer credits to build their subdivisions at a later date. Most of us were ignored when we inquired why some were heard and some not. But that has been too long ago to even discuss. Records will show what I am referring to.

The only foul odor that I’m concerned about is that Edwardsville Citizens are continually the subject of controversy, when all we are doing is maintaining our homes, paying our taxes and bills, and minding our own business. Quite frankly, I am embarrassed that my address is Georgetown.

Furthermore, I’m sure the Commissioners do not find it necessary for you to tell them what is going to be used as “fodder for the media,” when the elections come into play. The have a job to do and you or I or the elections should have no bearing as to their decisions. If you feel that the Commissioners are holding the entire town hostage, you would be better served to look at the issues that brought this to their attention in the first place.

The citizens of Edwardsville do not want to be forced to “bail out” the town of Georgetown, because of poor decisions that have been made in the past, and seem so intent on doing in the future.

— Betty McKim, Georgetown
