A friendly, neighborly Fourth of July challenge
In June of 2007, members of the then newly formed Franklin Commons Neighborhood Association decided they wanted to make a splash. They decided to create a float entry for Jeff’s annual Fourth of July Parade. And make a splash they did, with this re-creation of the Boston Tea Party. Neighborhood children, dressed as colonialist “Indians”, tossed tea bags to parade viewers.
Using borrowed, donated and recycled materials, the actual construction of the ship took a mere 4 hours with the participation of 10 to 15 members. The cost was a grand total of $35 dollars. The evening was fun and the results rewarding. A City Councilperson stated that “Had there been an award, your group would have won it.”
Thus we have the friendly, neighborly challenge.
The Franklin Commons Neighborhood Association would like to extend a friendly challenge to all Jeffersonville neighborhood associations to construct a float for the annual Fourth of July Parade. Let’s make this a friendly annual competition. Perhaps we can coax the City Council into providing a traveling trophy to reside with each year’s winning neighborhood.
How about it Northhaven, Cherry Hill, Claysburg, Rose Hill, Mallard Run and any and all other neighborhood associations in Jeffersonville? Care to accept a friendly challenge? For float entry info contact: Pat Elder at 812-282-1184 or Sharon Rudd at 812-283-7833.
We’ll see you on the Fourth!

Farr disputes Evaline’s column
The true irony in Rev. Chuck Evaline’s June 7, 2008, column, “The deadliest disease,” is that he is actually advocating what he says he is trying to stop: ignorance.
This is the same minister who wrote in his Sept. 16, 2006 column, “Press through the mess,” the following statement: “Don’t try and analyze [the Bible] and tear it apart.”
Through my letters, I have given Rev. Evaline many opportunities to address legitimate questions about the Bible and he continues to ignore me.
The Rev. Evaline wants you to study the Bible through his inerrant Fundamentalistic perspective: “God said it!” (he didn’t) “I believe it!” (you shouldn’t) “That settles it!” (no, it doesn’t).
How sad that a supposed “expert on the Bible” is actually advocating ignorance toward it.
— Larry E. Farr, Jeffersonville
