Obama to visit New Albany Wednesday

Presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., is scheduled to make a campaign stop in New Albany on Wednesday, campaign officials say.

Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., are running against each other for a spot on the November Democratic Party presidential ballot. Indiana’s primary is May 6. Clinton, along with husband former President Bill Clinton and daughter, Chelsea, have visited the area during the race.

Obama has gained public support from politicians in many areas of Southern Indiana, according to a news release from Obama for America. However, those representatives have mainly been limited to the Evansville area. While New Albany Mayor Doug England and Sen. Evan Bayh have publicly endorsed Clinton, there have not been similar local public declarations in Obama’s favor. However, some area representatives, such as Congressman Baron Hill, have stated they are undecided.

If the votes nationwide are too close to call, a selection of Democratic “superdelegates” could be called upon to choose which candidate makes the presidential ballot.
