Several events planned for New Albany Downtown Saturday

By DANIEL SUDDEATH

Develop New Albany will unveil its walking tour brochure on Saturday that describes historic-downtown sites.

It’s all part of a day of festivities that will also include complimentary guided tours of downtown with Floyd County Historian David Barksdale and other guides from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The tour brochures will be available in the White House Centre and the first 25 tour participants will receive an INShape in Historic Indiana water bottle, courtesy of Gov. Mitch Daniels’ INShape Indiana program.

Several historic sites will be open for public visits on Saturday. The Baptist Tabernacle, recently acquired by the City, will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is located at 318 E. 4th St.

Division Street School, located at 1803 Conservative St. and the Padgett Museum, located at 509 W. Market St. will be open to the public from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

New businesses in downtown will also be opening their doors to the public on Saturday. Mark Bobo, the new owner of the Fashion Shop Building located at 213 Pearl St., will speak at the site at 11 a.m.

Volunteers stripped the building of a 50-year-old metal cover on Monday and the owner will reveal plans for the structure during his speech.

The Baer Building — which will be the future home of River City Winery and is located at 321 Pearl St. — will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for views of updates to the building.

Saturday also marks the opening of the Farmers Market, which will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information on the Farmers Market, call Susan Kaempfer at 502-905-3640.

Downtown Saturdays sponsored by Develop New Albany will be held the first Saturday of every month. It was delayed until this Saturday due to last week’s Kentucky Derby.
