United States Army Specialist Joseph A. Ford, 23, of Knox, was killed in Al Asad, Iraq, on Saturday when his military vehicle overturned. His wife lives in Southern Indiana and he was assigned to the local National Guard unit.

The Army is still investigating the cause of the accident, but Army spokesman Staff Sgt. Jeff Lowry said it doesn’t appear to have been caused by a roadside bomb.

Ford was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 152nd Cavalry Regiment of the 76th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Army National Guard, in New Albany. He was from Knox, where his parents reside in Northern Indiana, and his wife lives in New Albany.

“I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Specialist Ford, who lost his life in the service of his nation,” said Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, Adjutant General of Indiana. “It is with true and personal sorrow that we acknowledge his sacrifice.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.”
