Changes coming to Blackiston Mill Road

The Floyd County Commissioners awarded bids Tuesday to repair bridge number 51 on Blackiston Mill Road and replace bridge number 21 on John Pectol Road.

EZ Construction was awarded the bid to repair the bridge for $89,821.35.

Fulkerson Contracting won the bid for the replacement project alternate one for $217,087.54 and alternate two for $210,000. Both of EZ’s alternate bids came in lower than the others received.

The bids for the City-County Building project were read and taken under advisement. That project includes fashioning a new superior court on the fourth floor, which needs to be ready by Jan. 1.

Larry Timperman, with Michell Timperman Ritz Architects, said he will quickly review the bids and ask the commissioners to hold a special meeting soon to approve the chosen bid so the project can get started.

$30,000 approved for New Albany police

The commissioners approved $30,000 for data cards for the New Albany Police Department. That money will come from the 911 fund.

Police Chief Greg Crabtree spoke to the board, citing Indiana Code that allows the 911 fund to pay for voice and data equipment, among other items. He said the data cards allow officers to communicate with dispatchers and turn in reports using their laptop computers.

Crabtree said the department has been using the cards for two years and the $30,000 will pay for the officers to continue for another year.

Also at the meeting

• Stanley Wheeler was appointed to the Animal Control Board. He will replace Mark Randall, who resigned.

• The board approved a petition to vacate property in the Jefferson Gardens area, located between St. Joe and Kamer Mill roads. Commissioner Mark Seabrook said the county had the right of way in that location and the petition asks that those with land there be given the rights to the area so that they can reconfigure their lots.

There will be public hearings for community members to voice their opinions on the proposed changes.

Those dates have not yet been set.

• Chris Kanemitsu was appointed to serve on a committee to determine common construction wages for various sewer, sanitary and stormwater projects in New Albany.

The estimated cost for the projects is $1,807,000.

• The commissioners approved the wording for a referendum that will be placed on the ballot in November.

The question approved is: “Should the assessing duties of the elected township assessor in the township be transferred to the county assessor?”
