• CLARK COUNTY

$5M in unclaimed property available

Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller visited with students at Ivy Tech Community College in Sellersburg on Thursday to announce Clark County residents have $5.66 million worth of unclaimed property – and how to find it.

In 2008, more than 4,000 new assets valued at more than a half million dollars were reported to the state as unclaimed. These properties belong to residents or former residents of Clark County or their heirs, a news release from the attorney general’s office says.

Zoeller encouraged Hoosiers to visit www.IndianaUnclaimed.com to search for unclaimed property belonging to themselves, friends, relatives or neighbors. Unclaimed property takes many forms including forgotten safe-deposit box contents, undelivered stock dividends and refunds on utilities deposits to name a few.

Financial institutions and other holders are required annually to turn over the assets of accounts in which there has been no activity for five or seven years, depending on the type of account. Unclaimed property includes investment earnings, insurance proceeds and benefits, wages, and money from savings and checking accounts.

Every year, the attorney general is required to advertise the list of unclaimed property turned over to the state during the previous year. The announcements run twice in a two week period in the newspaper closest to the last known address of the property owner.

The list is scheduled to publish Sunday in The Evening News, according to the release.

In total, the state’s unclaimed property database holds more than $383 million in assets. Last year, $172,779 was returned to 368 Hoosiers with last known addresses in Clark County.
