New Albany musician hopes Obama camp picks up his song

Barack Obama’s new campaign song may be a tune written and sang by a New Albany native, who goes by the name Nole Tuckett.

At least that’s what Tuckett’s hoping.

The 46-year-old, who still lives in New Albany, wrote the song “Thin, Thin Dime,” which is a mix of rock, blues and country, in 1986.

Now, more than 20 years later, he has created a music video filled with pictures of America’s hard times, such as the Great Depression, to go along with the peppy beat and country voice.

Tuckett said America needs a change and people can make that happen.

“It’s just like everybody, everywhere you look ... you see people who can’t have things because they don’t have the money,” he said. “Hell, we’re the people. There’s more of us (than the president).

“If everybody speaks out, they have to hear you. They’ll have to listen.”

He’s hoping Obama’s campaign picks up the video, which they received last week, and adds Democratic Party presidential nominee to the end of it, saying something to the effect that he will lead that change in America.

“I hope to God we get somebody in there who will give us a break,” Tuckett said. “I’m just crying out for everybody.”

The break he is referring to is what he calls an economic depression. In his song, Tuckett says, “Congress is callin’ it a recession and I’m callin’ it a depression. The president wants to borrow $4 billion more to send to a foreign country to fight some war.

“If that money’s lookin’ for some pocket to find, it’d be a lot better off in yours and mine. Like I said before I’d do just fine if I could learn to make it on a thin, thin dime.”

Tuckett said the song can help anyone who is going through a hard time right now.

“When you’re blue, you can listen to this song and realize we’re all in this together,” he said as his song and video played in the background.

Tuckett hopes to sell enough downloads of the song off his MySpace.com profile to record more songs and eventually release a whole CD.

“Even if I don’t make a penny, that’s OK,” Tuckett lamented. “I still got to say something. That’s all I was aiming to do.”

SING A LONG

Below are the lyrics to Nole Tuckett’s “Thin, Thin Dime”

“I was standing in the unemployment line. I’d been standing there a mighty long time, fillin’ out forms till I thought I’d go blind when I looked up and said I’d do just fine if I could learn to make it on a thin, thin dime.

“Congress is callin’ it a recession and I’m callin’ it a depression. The president wants to borrow $4 billion more to send to a foreign country to fight some war.

“If that money’s lookin’ for some pocket to find, it’d be a lot better off in yours and mine. Like I said before I’d do just fine if I could learn to make it on a thin, thin dime.

“A lot of us wait for our ship to come in, but I think mine sank; it was made out of tin. So don’t wait around on some silver-lined cloud, ‘cause your just another face in the crowd. If you ask me how I’m doin’ I’ll say just fine I’m trying to learn to make it on a thin, thin dime.”
