Clark County Vietnam family members sought

Red Cross still looking for volunteers to work at traveling wall

Organizers of the upcoming visit of the moving Vietnam wall are looking for family members of those heroes who died in battle to participate in the opening ceremony at 6 p.m. Oct. 8.

It will take place at the 4-H Fairgrounds along Ind. 62 in Charlestown, where the wall will remain for viewing until Oct. 12. Organizers are inviting family members of those killed in Vietnam — whether from Clark County or not — to participate.

Below is a list of people who organizers have not located family for, and they can contact Donna Ennis at 502-548-8604 or donna.ennis@insightbb.com. Those fallen include:



• Murray Lee Veron, Army, 21, of Borden, died Jan. 31, 1968

• John M. Graham, Army, 31, of Charlestown, died Jan. 16, 1971

• Willie Elsworth H. Honaker, Army, 24, of Clarksville, died Sept. 5, 1965

• John Thomas McDaniel, Marines, 21, of Clarksville, died July 27, 1969

• Larry Lee Chapman, Army, 20, of Henryville, died April 17, 1968

• Michael W. Rector, Navy, 20, of Henryville, died May 14, 1969

• James Earl Lakins, Army, 31, of Henryville, died Jan. 17, 1970

• Leonard I. Craven, Army, 31, of Jeffersonville, died Feb. 11, 1966

• Richard L. Barley, Marines, 21, of Jeffersonville, died Jan. 31, 1968

• William E. Morman, Army, 20, of Jeffersonville, died Nov. 11, 1968

• James H. Sumner, Marines, 40, of Jeffersonville, died May 2, 1969

• Robert D. Lewis, Army, 25, of Jeffersonville, died May 12, 1969

• William G. Smith, Marines, 20, of Sellersburg, died Feb. 21, 1968

• Willard Skaggs, Army, 22, of Sellersburg, died March 3, 1968

• Cal Thomas Hammack, Marines, 19, of Sellersburg, died Jan. 29, 1969

• Thomas M. Barnett, Army, 27, of Sellersburg, died Sept. 26, 1970

Also, the Clark County Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for volunteers to work at the wall, which will be open for viewing around the clock.

Volunteers will work four-hour shifts, around the clock. Jobs will range from helping find names on the wall, security, food preparation, parking, first aid tent, crisis counseling and many other tasks.

Those interested in volunteering must attend one of two orientation sessions to be held at the chapter, 1805 E. Eighth St., Jeffersonville.

The first session is from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, and the second session is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. All volunteers who participate will receive a commemorative T-shirt.
