GCCS hosting three college events for area high schools

Greater Clark County Schools will host Close the Deal events at Charlestown, Jeffersonville and New Washington high schools in December to help students make the transition from high school to college and other post-secondary education or training.

Table Talks are the focus of the program, in which seniors will be assigned a table and will participate in a total of three 20-minute discussions. The adult leading the discussion will rotate to a different table at the end of 20 minutes, so at the end of the event, students will hear from an admissions professional, a financial aid professional and a student who has been through the college selection process before.

Following the talks there will be a college information fair of the colleges represented by Greater Louisville Inc.

The program, which lasts about two or three hours, will be at the following locations and times:

• Dec. 2, 11:30 a.m., New Washington High School, 226 Ind. 62, New Washington.

• Dec. 9, 10:30 a.m., Charlestown High School, No. One Pirate Place, Charlestown.

• Dec. 15, 7:45 a.m., Jeffersonville High School, 2315 Allison Lane, Jeffersonville.

Treatment program will sponsor a food drive, cornhole tournament

The Clark County Drug Treatment Court Program will sponsor a food drive and cornhole tournament from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday on the front lawn of the Clark County Building, 501 E. Court Ave., Jeffersonville.

The food drive will be the first sponsored by the treatment program. The court wants to increase public awareness and give back to the community.

Participants are asked to donate nonperishable items which will be given to the area food bank. For each item donated, the individual will receive four tosses at the cornhole board. The person with the most points at the end of the day will win a prize.

The program was established by Judge Cecile Blau in 2002 as a division of Clark County Superior Court No. 2 and probation services. The program is only one of 25 adult drug treatment courts in the state and certified directly by the Indiana Supreme Court.

The court has provided rehabilitative services to more than 100 substance abuse offenders while their cases remain pending in Superior Court.

If anyone is interested in being a volunteer or donating a prize to be awarded, contact the court at 812-285-6333. You may also ask for more information about the advisory board that meets quarterly.
