Floyd Central and New Albany high schools team up for art workshop; fundraiser gives parents free time to shop

Money raised to benefit FCHS and NAHS art departments

For the fourth year, the art departments at Floyd Central and New Albany high schools are teaming together to raise some money while helping parents make time for holiday shopping.

The students are doing that by hosting a Children’s Holiday Art Workshop, where parents can drop off their child for three hours of painting, creating crafts and more.

“I just think it’s providing a service for the community and we’re doing something that promotes art at the same time,” Kevin Schultz, art teacher at NAHS, said.

Schultz came up with the idea four years ago, when she was trying to think of a new fundraising option for the arts awards fund, which gives cash awards to students from middle and high schools in Floyd County who win at the annual art competition in the spring.

Schultz always had fond memories of participating in and working art workshops in the past, so she decided to start the fundraising tradition.

Schultz buys the art supplies, leaving all the money made to go directly to the awards fund.

Emily Robinett, sophomore at NAHS, said she is looking forward to her first year working the fundraiser.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for any parent who would like to get some shopping done without having to bring their kids along with them,” she said. “It’s a really good opportunity for kids to learn about art and have a great time doing it.”

Activities for the workshops include making ornaments, holiday cards, gift bags, decorating tiles and more.

“We’re not really baby-sitting,” Schultz said. “We’re actually teaching them how to do some things.”

Schultz said she will enlist the help of high school student volunteers to assist in teaching and supervising the children. Due to that, reservations are required so that she can make sure to have enough students there.

Schultz said all participants will be able to take home the works created.
