HS ROUNDUP: Highlanders storm back, beat Scottsburg

Borden, Clarksville also prevail

The Floyd Central boys’ basketball team sent their seniors out in a big way on Saturday night, rallying in the fourth quarter to post a 63-60 victory over Scottsburg.

The Warriors canned eight 3-pointers in the opening three quarters, to pull out to a 48-40 lead heading into the final period.

The Highlanders then clamped down, holding the visitors to three field goals over the final eight minutes, only one of which came from downtown.

“We just picked up the defense,” said Floyd Central assistant coach Brian Kehrer. “They like to put the shots up from outside and they were knocking down a lot of them in the early going.”

Buddy McAfee scored 21 points in the win for the Highlanders (5-14). He scored three quick baskets early in the fourth quarter to ignite the decisive charge. Cody Banet added eight, including a 3 in the final period that put the Highlanders in front for the remainder of the contest.

“We just sort of went to Buddy inside on offense,” said Kehrer. “They really had trouble matching up with him and he took advantage. Cody hit a huge 3 and Nick Biery added another one for us later in the fourth quarter.”

• Generals win at home: Clarksville was finally able to get back into the win column on Saturday night, beating Washington Catholic at home, 62-49.

The Generals (6-13) grabbed a 23-14 advantage through one quarter and held a 35-23 cushion at halftime — helping end a three-game losing streak.

Four Generals scored in double figures paced by Tyler Merchant’s 13-point effort. Corey Bowens contributed 11 and Ryan Gettelfinger and Stephen Reeves each added 10.

“We played pretty well,” said Clarksville assistant coach Steve Merchant. “These guys really have played pretty well in all our games recently, but we have had a tendency to let the games get away from us with one bad stretch here or there.

“Tonight we took care of business and played a solid all-around game.”

• Braves win sixth straight: Borden stayed red hot, winning its third consecutive road game and sixth straight overall by toppling host Springs Valley, 56-30.

The Braves (14-4) have not lost since Jan. 19, when they fell 60-56 at Henryville in a game that would have given them an outright Southern Athletic Conference title. The current streak includes wins over then-Class A No. 1 Orleans and larger schools in Class 3A Crawford County and 2A Clarksville.

Kaden Nolot followed a 19-point night against the Generals on Friday by leading Borden with 13 points in the win over the Blackhawks (3-15). Michael Chester added 12, while Lee Kirchgessner had 10. Eight Braves scored in the victory.

Borden will head home to meet West Washington on Tuesday.
