The Clarksville softball team staked its claim as the hottest squad in the Clark-Floyd area during its recent 10-game winning streak.
But Floyd Central may still be the toughest.
The Highlanders stopped the Generals’ streak cold on Wednesday, scoring eight runs in the first inning in a 10-0 victory in five innings.
Floyd (12-4) got a three-run home run from Jenna Mackin to open the scoring, following consecutive base hits against Clarksville pitcher Kelly Betz. The first five Highlanders to bat came away with hits.
“We didn’t expect that with the way we’ve been hitting in the past week,” said Highlander coach Joe Witten. “I’m very proud of how our hitters came out aggressive and attacked early in the count instead of getting behind.”
Randa Harbison (3-2) made the most out of her first start of the season, holding a potent Clarksville offense to three hits while striking out nine.
Katie Phillips hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to provide the final margin. Jordyn Clark — Floyd’s No. 9 hitter — went 2-for-2 to collect her first multihit game.
Floyd will play in an invitational at Boone County (Ky.) on Saturday. The Generals (15-5) host Pekin Eastern today.
• Hornets turn back Rebels: Visiting Henryville scored the first four runs and held on for a 4-1 victory over South Central.
Ashley Dickerson went 3-for-4 in the victory and led off the game with a solo homer. Haley Hall went 3-for-3 for Henryville.
“Haley and Ashley had six of our eight hits. I just wish the entire team would come ready to compete,” said Henryville coach Jenny Odle. “Everyone has to compete for us to play as well as we are capable of playing.”
Amanda Embry picked up the win on the mound for the Hornets (14-3). Henryville travels to Shawe Memorial today.
• Stirns lead Jeff past Salem: Morgan Stirn drove in the eventual game-winning run and sister Megan threw a five-hitter in Jeff’s 2-1 home win over Salem.
In the bottom of the fifth with the score tied at one, Morgan Stirn collected an RBI single to knock in Kim Hensley.
Megan Stirn pitched all seven innings, striking out five and walking none. Her record improved to 8-3.
“It was a much better effort,” Red Devil head coach Becky Shafer said. “The kids’ batting was more disciplined that it was Monday night (against Brownstown). With Megan, she’s going to throw strikes and the defense has to make plays behind her.”
Jeff (10-6) visits Madison today.
• New Albany edges HHC foe: Two runs in the bottom of the third were all the Bulldogs needed in a 2-1 victory over visiting Jennings County.
RBIs from Chelsea Jordan and Chelsea Banks accounted for the Bulldog runs, while pitcher Faith Griffaw did the rest. She surrendered one run in the first inning, but did not allow another in a four-hitter to improve to 8-7 on the year.
New Albany (8-8) hosts Southwestern today.
• Pirates crush New Wash in five: Charlestown scored at least a run in all five innings, cruising past host New Washington, 11-0.
Charlestown (8-5) scored its first run without a hit, as Kelsie Houchins drew a walk from Katie Rager, stole two bases and then scored on a passed ball. Amanda Miller — the winning pitcher for the Pirates — went 3-for-4 with two doubles. Lindsey Sprinkle had two hits and stole two bases in the win.
“It was a good win for us,” said Charlestown coach Kevin Zollman. “We played errorless ball, and that always makes it easier to win.”
Charlestown hosts Brownstown today. New Washington entertains South Central today.

BASEBALL
• Poole lifts Jeff past Jennings: Cody Poole hit two home runs, including a game-winning solo shot in the top of the eighth inning to help the Devils beat Jennings County, 6-5.
Poole also led off the sixth with a solo homer, while Hunter Tipton — Jeff’s starting pitcher — also homered, as he went 2-for-2 with three RBIs.
Aaron Hargett improved to 3-3 on the mound for Jeff, now 13-3 on the season.
“It was a good win against a (Hoosier Hills) conference school,” said Jeff coach Al Rabe. “Hunter had a little trouble early, but gained command later and had good stuff.”
Jeff will host St. Xavier tonight.
• Bulldogs outslug North Harrison: The host Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead, then watched the Cougars nearly rallied back but fall short in a 9-6 victory at Mt. Tabor Field.
Phil Forbis had two doubles and three RBIs, Nathan Poff went 2-for-3 and Travis Sands had two RBIs in support of his own winning effort on the mound. Sands improved to 4-1 on the season. Jacob Jones also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for New Albany.
The Bulldogs host Providence today.

BOYS’ GOLF
• Mustangs edge field at Hanover: New Washington combined for a team score of 196 to edge Pekin Eastern by a single stoke in a four-way meet at Springs Hill Golf Course.
Crothersville posted a score of 222, while Rock Creek Christian also competed, but did not have a team score by fielding only three players.
New Washington meets Henryville and Silver Creek at Champions Pointe today.
• Dragons roll past Clarksville: Brandon White and Joey David each posted even-par 35s and Silver Creek went on to beat Clarksville 153-220 at Wooded View.
Michael Seaton had a 41 for Silver Creek, but the highlight came from Kaleb Lay, who had a hole-in-one from 154 yards out on the par-3 third hole.
Ryan Gettlefinger led Clarksville with a 48.
Both teams will play in the Corydon Invitational on Saturday.

GIRLS’ TENNIS
• Floyd dominates Vincennes: The Highlanders swept both doubles matches and got another strong match from their No. 1 singles player in a 4-1 victory over Vincennes.
Floyd’s Kelsey Wisman won a 6-0, 6-1 decision at one singles, while teammate Jessica VanWinkle lost the first set but rallied to win at No. 3.
The Highlanders’ Kayla Prusinski and Emma LaDuke continued their strong campaign at the one doubles spot, overwhelming Annie Newman and Katie LeMarch 6-1, 6-2. Alyssa Botkins and Kayla Oldham also picked up a point at No. 2 doubles for Floyd.
The Highlanders will host Providence on Monday.
• Generals make it four in a row: Both Clarksville doubles tandems dropped the first set, but rallied to win in the Generals’ 5-0 sweep of Corydon.
Ashley Lind and Breanna Shireman came back for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win in the one doubles position. Jazzmine Rolon and Allison Dodson likewise fell behind in the two doubles match, recovering for a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) victory.
Deahna Welcher rolled 6-0, 6-1 in the one singles match, while Tiffany Fitzpatrick and Jamie Wilkerson picked up singles victories for Clarksville.
The Generals travel to New Washington today.
• Dragons sweep Scottsburg: On Tuesday, Silver Creek defeated host Scottsburg 5-0 in a Mid-Southern Conference match.
Winning for the Dragons in singles action were Sarah Hebble at the No. 1 spot, Morgan Coquerille at No. 2 and Cayleigh Yost at No. 3. Silver Creek’s Kendall Regan and Taylor East prevailed at one doubles, while teammates Ally DeWeese and Alexa Leonard won at two doubles.
The Dragons will play in the Jasper Invitational Friday and Saturday.

GIRLS’ TRACK
• Charlestown wins home quad meet: On Tuesday, Charlestown scored 85 points to win a home quadrangular meet. Christian Academy of Indiana was second with 54 points, followed by Southwestern (53) and Rock Creek (eight).
The Pirates’ Elizabeth Stephens took first place in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles, while teammate Kathryn Cross won the 3,200. Charlestown’s 400 and 1,600 relay teams also prevailed.
“It was a good team effort for all runners and throwers,” Pirates coach Kim Carroll said. “This was one of the highest-scoring meets we have had, and everyone contributed in their event.”
Charlestown will compete in the MSC Championships next Tuesday at North Harrison.
