IUS baseball, softball teams win KIAC titles

Both the Indiana University Southeast baseball and softball teams captured Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championships on Saturday.

The Grenadier baseball team defeated Brescia University 14-0 in the tournament final in Berea, Ky.

Pitcher Kris Eschman tossed a complete-game shutout, fanning five and allowing six hits and three walks.

Offensively, first baseman Mark Abell and second baseman Brandon Hogan combined to go 6-for-9 with six RBIs and Drew Locascio and Ben Wyatt each plated three runs in IUS onslaught

During the tourney, IU Southeast (31-22) outscored the opposition, 48-4. It defeated Berea on Thursday, 11-2, and Brescia on Friday, 22-2.

The Grenadiers will play in the NAIA Region XII Tournament in Kingsport, Tenn., next Thursday.

The IU Southeast softball squad won its second straight KIAC Tournament title by winning two games at home on Saturday. IU Southeast (29-10) downed Midway in the semifinals, 7-1, and Mountain State in the championship, 3-0.

The Grenadiers will host the Region XII Tournament, starting Wednesday.



WOMEN’S TENNIS

• IU Southeast falls in region tourney: The Grenadiers’ season ended on Saturday with a 5-0 setback to Union in the Region XII Tournament championship in Milligan, Tenn.

IU Southeast (11-5) suffered losses at the top two singles positions. At one singles, Jillian Becher fell 6-3, 6-0. Teammate Britta Oliver lost at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2. The Grenadiers also dropped all three doubles matches.

On Friday, IU Southeast won its semifinal match against host Milligan College, 5-1. Winning in singles action for the Grenadiers were Oliver at No. 2 singles and Nikki Cannon at three singles.

Claiming doubles wins for IU Southeast were Cannon and Becher at No. 1, Oliver and Brooklyn Becher at No. 2 and Lauren Becher and Floyd Central graduate Abby Enteman at No. 3.
